"Britpop" is a brand of UK alternative/indie rock that emerged in Britain from about 1988 onwards. It was mostly an early to mid 90s phenomenon. The genre became a rebellion against the American grunge scene that was taking the music world by storm at the time. Britpop reached its pinnacle in 1995/6 with intense rivalries between Oasis and Blur and their infamous chart battle known as "The Battle of the Bands". The genre fizzled out at the end of the 90s, although a second wave of Britpop has started in the 00s.
