why is day-lewis so low on this list? surely hes a lock for the top 10?!?

Maybe it's because I'm unfamiliar with a lot of his work, but Alec Guinness seems a little high.

It was made a while ago, certainly before TWBB. But you've still got some ridiculous stuff like Hanks and Mifune being so low.

Agreed. Someone like Peter O'Toole would be a better fit for that position (second-greatest British film actor, if you will) IMO, although it could really go either way. His awards resume is certainly nothing to fuck with. Guinness really only has one performance (River Kwai) that's of the same stature as Lawrence, Ruling Class, and The Stunt Man -- although I'd personally watch Kind Hearts and Coronets over any of them, any day of the week.

Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, mostly. But <10 places among every actor ever isn't all that much.

Pacino is better than Hoffman imo. That's the only thing that I really don't like.

honestly, those 4 should be in a group... DeNiro>Nicholson>Hoffman>Pacino (thats not my personal preference, which actually goes Pacino>Hoffman>DeNiro>Nicholson)... i dont see any reason why DeNiro should be THAT much ahead of them. personally i think it goes Brando, Olivier, Chaplin, that group of 4, then Stewart & Bogart, then DDL, then Newman.

even before TWBB, my list had DDL at i think 14th. then he was moved down when i stepped down as editor, and then TWBB came out after that.

I agree with his objective ranking. My personal preference would be Nicholson>Hoffman>DeNiro>Pacino.
