As I'm sitting here, trying to locate any video links to Yngwie's appearance on Jimmy Fallon's show, I figured I'd try making one of those tier thingies that are so popular in the Favorite Artist section.

Quote:
Steeler (with Steeler)
No Parole from Rock N' Roll (with Alcatrazz)
Rising Force
Marching Out
Trilogy
Odyssey
Eclipse
Fire and Ice
The Seventh Sign
Magnum Opus
Inspiration
Facing the Animal
Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E flat minor, Opus 1
Alchemy
War to End All Wars
Attack!!
Unleash the Fury
Perpetual Flame
Relentless

As always, bold is good, red is even better, while orange marks the most essential albums. With Yngwie I feel that only Rising Force is undoubtedly essential, whereas the rest range from great to uninspired, with everything in between.

Almost forgot, here's a brief Beatles cover: http://www.2shared.com/audio/3GIcWn_B/1 ... La-Da.html

Thanks for opening Yngwie thread, the man really deserves it.

About the tiers...if it's strictly guitar playing wise, than Alchemy could be red, some superb guitar work there and if it's all things considered (guitar playing, songwriting, vocals), I'd put Odyssey as red, mostly because JLT and Yngwie were such a great team.

I always loved Yngwie's playing a lot. He seemed like pretty egoistic man to me but no denying his huge skills!

Good points on both. I was never a huge fan of Odyssey because of the overly poppy sound, but there's no denying the awesomeness of YJM and JLT together. Alchemy is a personal favourite, but I don't know if it's all that highly acclaimed.

Well, Odyssey has glam influences in it (but so do all albums where JLT sings), but still it is acclaimed and some really good songs. I've heard numerous people calling it the last great Yngwie album.

Alchemy...I'm like you, I don't know if it's acclaimed, but one of my faves from Yngwie (haven't them all tbh)

I've yet to hear it, but my expectations aren't high. From what I hear, only the instrumental songs are new, the rest is outtakes from Perpetual Flame. Hell, Ripper himself wasn't sure if he was even a member of the band anymore, having been kept out of the loop for so long.

That does definitely not bode well for the music, and I think it's a damn shame Ripper isn't allowed to be more involved than this. I haven't heard Perpetual Flame either, nor have I heard Angels of Love. Latest Yngwie album I bought is Unleash the Fury, and I haven't listened to that one more than once or twice.

Wait, is Ripper still a member of the band in the end?

Yngwie has always had unique ways of doing things...

Yeah, Inspiration is a somewhat forgotten gem. I think "Demon's Eye" is absolutely stellar, but "Child in Time" was disappointing, especially with a powerhouse singer like Boals.

in response to child in time, both him and Balsamo - apparently 2 vastly better singers technically than Gillan, failed ..

Gillan :metal:

Boals, Balsamo = technically flawless voices with zero edge or bite.

I wouldn't go THAT far, but I do agree that for a song like "Child in Time", you need some rawness that a lot of more 'mannered' singers do not possess. Rob Halford would've done a most excellent job singing that song, and I actually find it a bit strange that he's never sung a classic Deep Purple song. His voice would've been perfect for it.

And speaking of Halford, one of my dream collaborations would've featured mid-'80s Halford and mid-'80s Malmsteen. The closest we'll ever get is "We're Stars", where both are at just blowing away all competition.
