Here we go again.

Harvest is the official #2 NY album on critical acclaim, but it receives too much criticism from his fans as having too much filler to be orange. RNS, OTB, TTN or EKTIK could all essentially be orange. The problem is I don't think NY has a 2nd greatest album among fans. I know Rust Never Sleeps is more acclaimed, but I plumped for On the Beach for 2 reasons: 1. It's his second highest rated album on RYM 2. It's acclaim is only lacking because it was a "lost album" for so many years and on it's re-release a few years a go the reviews were unanimously brilliant.

I could maybe allow us 3 oranges for Neil so ATGR, OTB and RNS are all orange. I don't think it's a stretch to rank him alongside the greatest album artists OAT and his career is so big I'm not sure 3 oranges would hurt.

I would definitely go for Rust with the orange, and that's coming from another member of the On The Beach is my fav Neil album brigade.

Look out, Mama, there's a white boat comin' up the river
With a big red beacon and a flag, and a man on the rail
I think you'd better call John, 'cause it don't look like they're here to deliver the mail
And it's less than a mile away, I hope they didn't come to stay
It's got numbers on the side and a gun and it's makin' big waves.

Daddy's gone, my brother's out hunting in the mountains
Big John's been drinking since the river took Emmy-Lou
So the powers that be left me here to do the thinkin'
And I just turned twenty-two, I was wonderin' what to do
And the closer they got, the more those feelings grew.

Daddy's rifle in my hand felt reassurin'
He told me: "red means run, son, numbers add up to nothin' "
But when the first shot hit the docks I saw it comin'
Raised my rifle to my eye, never stopped to wonder why.
Then I saw black and my face splashed in the sky.

Shelter me from the powder and the finger
Cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger
Think of me as one you'd never figured
Would fade away so young, with so much left undone
Remember me to my love, I know I'll miss her.

Neil is such a fantastic storyteller.

That's my favourite Neil song. Like you say, amazing storytelling. Plus the song has some beautiful emotional guitar work and those amazing haunting backing vocals.

Anything from RNS is incredible though. :thumb: Defintiely in the very upper echelons of my favourite albums.

Agreed.

Any album that contains songs like Hey Hey My My (Into the Black), Thrasher, and Powderfinger, is automatically special.

Really getting into Live Rust '78 atm, think I may prefer it to Massey Hall '71. It's just a shame that they didn't include the version of Thrasher.

i like Live Rust but it is not a cohesive live album in the same way that Massey Hall is.

this song is sooo good in stripped down acoustic

has anyone here actually gone out and bought the archives? it's definitely worth dling, but there's no way i can justify spending $300 for a bunch of remastered albums i already own and a few rare outtakes.

the rare rick james-neil young song from 1966 is pretty cool though

Come a Time is so underrated. Such an amazing album, just makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Getting into Harvest Moon as well atm.

i've been pretty slack with that album and have never really given it a thorough listening but the title track has always been a favourite, particularly the live rust version.

I've listened to "Journey Through the Past" so many times in the past few days, it's so good. Time Fades Away is yet another Neil album which I'm really getting into. I think he actually tops Dylan in terms of sheer number of good albums and songs, though his peak probably isn't as high (but it's not far off at all).
