Meh, a lot of the metal lists on the main site are bull and outdated (GWAR is number 26 on the speed/thrash list for cripes sake). No surprise that this particular list was put up in 2005. Anyway, if this is going to be done, there should first be separate lists for black and death metal. It's stupid to combine the two.

Point taken regarding black and death being separate.

Black:
1. Under The Sign Of The Black Mark (Bathory)
2. To Mega Therion (Celtic Frost)
3. Blood Fire Death (Bathory)
4. In The Nightside Eclipse (Emperor)
5. De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (Mayhem)
6. Transylvanian Hunger (Darkthrone)
7. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (Burzum)
8. Under A Funeral Moon (Darkthrone)
9. Pure Holocaust (Immortal)
10. Storm of The Light's Bane (Dissection)

Death:
1. Human (Death)
2. Altars Of Madness (Morbid Angel)
3. Scream Bloody Gore (Death)
4. Seven Churches (Possessed)
5. Heartwork (Carcass)
6. Slaughter Of The Soul (At The Gates)
7. Unquestionable Presence (Atheist)
8. Covenant (Morbid Angel)
9. The Jester Race (In Flames)
10. Symphonies Of Sickness (Carcass)
11. Scum (Napalm Death)
12. The Bleeding (Cannibal Corpse)
13. Cause of Death (Obituary)
14. The Gallery (Dark Tranquillity)
15. Still Life (Opeth)

How are these?

Is Pure Holocaust greater than Storm of the Light's Bane?
I see Immortal as being a greater band but not sure on the albums.
More of a question than a suggestion.

Probably Dissection, though I think their debut is more important from a purely black metal standpoint

When it comes to death metal, Necroticism should be over Symphonies and Scum shouldn't be here. There should be a lot more albums before Opeth and In Flames are on the list. I'll give suggestions soon.

To Mega Therion isn't a black metal album. Hvis lyset tar oss should move ahead of Transilvanian Hunger and De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. I wouldn't be opposed to it being higher than In the Nightside Eclipse, though I would rather Nightside be higher. I could also see Filosofem sneaking in between the two Darkthrone albums and Storm of the Light's Bane moving ahead of Pure Holocaust. Anthems to the Welkin should be at around 11th and an Enslaved album just outside the top 10 would be nice, too. Probably Vikingligr Veldi

I know Death are the greatest death metal band overall, but I don't think Human should be above Altars of Madness. Heartwork and Slaughter of the Soul are too high. Unquestionable Presence and Necroticism should slide up there with Heartwork and SotS moving in behind them. I also think Covenant is too high and should be dropped out of the top 10. I don't think it should be on the list before Blessed Are the Sick anyway. The Jester Race and Still Life might also be a little too high and Symphonies of Sickness and Scum should be much lower, after the top 25.

Albums that should be in the top 20 or so:

Amorphis - Tales From the Thousand Lakes
Autopsy - Mental Funeral
Cryptopsy - None So Vile
Cynic - Focus
Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Deicide - Legion
Demilich - Nespithe
Dismember - Like an Ever Flowing Stream
Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Entombed - Clandestine
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Hypocrisy - Abducted
Immolation - Close to a World Below
Incantation - Onward to Golgotha
Opeth - My Arms, Your Hearse
Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
Suffocation - Pierced From Within
Terrorizer - World Donwfall (debatable, but I think it has enough death metal to it)

Yup, Heartwork and SotS are too high. There shouldn't be an Opeth album in the top 25. Sorry, but Opeth has virtually zero influence and importance in death metal. One of the early albums could probably find a spot just outside the top 25, but not their later material. There are more Autopsy, Obituary, Immolation, Atheist, Grave, Unleashed, Pestilence, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide and even At the Gates albums to be added before those, and then there's stuff from Master, Asphyx, Gorguts, Therion, Benediction, etc. Don't think Focus deserves a very high spot either (not higher than most of the albums already suggested).

If Seven Churches qualifies, then early Sepultura probably should as well.

Scum isn't death metal, period. The only grind albums that should be on are Harmony Corruption, Symphonies of Sickness, World Downfall and Horrified.

The top ten only has like 4 pure death metal albums, and that doesn't look very good.

I was also thinking of later spots for Carnage, Benediction and maybe diSEMBOWLMENT

Yes it is. If it isn't black then what the hell is it? It's not thrash.

Its too avant-garde to be thrash. Not to mention the music and the language of it has more shades of Darkthrone and Burzum than Slayer and Pantera.

In regards to other comments, I agree that Beneath The Remains and World Downfall should be on the list.

You know avant-garde metal is usually influence by avant-garde jazz. There isn't a lot of jazz influence in Celtic Frost.

Besides, you can't be "too something to be something else". It may have a little black metal to it, but not nearly enough to warrant a spot on the list.

I don't think Beneath the Remains is really a death metal album.
