This is a 2010 list, not a 1973 list, so it'd apply to the definition of 'heavy metal' within the metal subculture today.

... incorrect on Hendrix being heavier or more metal than DP or Zep ..... not sure how the Wishbone Ash quote ties to this as I am not asking for DP to be added as a metal or heavy metal band ... other than stating they have done tunes which are both ... and they were called heavy metal but almost everyone in the 70`s including most music magazines ... what I am stating is that it seems the name of the band is determining that staus of the tune .... if Iron Maiden had originally done Child in Time or Highway Star or Fools or Fireball note for note the same as DP, there is little doubt how the tune would be labelled .... DEEP PURPLE have had a rough time gaining and retaining the status of being Kings of the Heavy Metal Set, and with the release of their last album, Who Do We Think We Are?, many critics rejected the fawnish fivesome for (1) trying to step out of their league with electronic-cum-Yes gizmos and melodic lines or (2) staying within the confines of their initial blockbuster, Deep Purple in Rock.

I was pretty pleased with the new Deep Purple album when it first came in the mail, since it was a good heavy metal album

Why would the addition of songs by those bands necessarily mean they have to be included in every other list? I think gminer's point is well reasoned and makes perfect sense. There's been countless discussions about whether or not those bands were metal, where the general consensus was that they weren't, but they had songs that were.

To use a more modern example, take the Steve Vai song "Bad Horsie". I doubt you'd say that song isn't metal, even though Steve Vai isn't a metal artist. If that song were to be great enough for this list (which most, including me, probably don't think it is), would it not be eligble?

Yeah, I don't understand why it should affect the other lists. To to be considered on the "greatest metal albums" or "greatest metal artists" lists, you need to have released a primarily metal album, but a metal song is a metal song, not matter what else the artist has released.

Machine Head in albums list? Or Deep Purple in bands? If DP would have 3-4 songs in this list and one (maybe more) album that is at least in the top 30 in greatest metal albums than it should make top 100 greatest metal bands, hmm?

Well, if we add DP, than we should add GnR, AC/DC also.

One or two out of 18 studio records, doesn't quite cut it, IMO. I'll admit to not having extensive information about DP's discography, though, so I don't want to discuss whether or not they qualify as a heavy metal band. One thing is certain, though, songs like "Highway Star" are heavy metal without a doubt. IMO, you're making this a lot more complicated than it necessarily needs to be. Early references to heavy metal, like the one you procured, can be found about Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Blue Cheer and whatnot aswell. Doesn't mean we have to change our entire view of which bands are metal or not, just to add some songs. Especially considering how important some of these songs have been to the further development of heavy metal, regardless of whether the album it's on is metal or if the band in mention is metal.

I'd also consider a song like "My Michelle" to be heavy metal, so if it were to be great enough for this list, I'd vouch for its addition. Same thing counts for AC/DC or any other band.

... not suggesting the pioneering bands be listed only recognized if it is agreeable and they fit certain lists .... historically going back to 1960-64 many references are made to this era for example ... and it doesn`t mean they have to be ignored, they are just reference points ... Take care

If we're putting Rainbow just for 2-3 albums in 'greatest metal bands' list, than we can do the same for DP. Of course only if we'll decide that most of the songs from IR and MH are metal (for me, Highway Star isn't the most heavy from MH for example, so if we're going to put HS in this list than we should do the same for MH in albums list).

My vote goes to 'DP is hard rock in todays standards, so we shouldn't include DP anywhere'. But ofc if I get outvoted in this I'll add Highway Star, Child in Time, Smoke on the Water, maybe Black Night from DP, Highway to Hell, Back in Black, Hells Bells from AC/DC, Immigrant Song, Whole Lotta Love, maybe Stairway (?) from LZ, Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child O Mine from GnR and maybe even Rock Bottom, Purple Haze, 2112 (it's often claimed that Rush was an inspiration for metal bands), In A Gadda Da Vida, Born To Be Wild, Detroit Rock City, I Was Made For Loving You, some Van Halen etc.

Because 'if you added Highway Star, why you didn't do the same for (...)'. And adding at least 10 songs from above will make the list a lot different. IMO, worse. But decision is up to you guys.


Oh btw - Deep Purple owns. I know, I know, words of wisdom.
