If you check these against the yearly lists just about everything stays in the same order within each year. I think it's the same for Brian's 1970's lists.

All right, everyone knows I'm a huge Who fan and all, but, c'mon, does anyone really think "Sunshine of Your Love", for example, is a greater rock song than "My Generation"?

By the criteria "My Generation" is too high as it is. It failed to crack the top 70 on the Billboard singles chart. It was not a big record in the 60s at all.

It went to #2 in the UK.

"SOYL" by the early 70s was among the ten or twenty greatest rock songs of all time on most radio station all time lists.

I guess I'll have to take your word for it. However...

Rolling Stone and MTV - 100 Greatest Pop Songs Since The Beatles (2000)

My Generation - #33
Sunshine of Your Love - Nowhere

Rolling Stone - The 100 Best Singles Of The Last 25 Years (1989)

My Generation - #16
Sunshine of Your Love - Nowhere

Rolling Stone - 100 Greatest Guitar Songs Of All Time (2008)

My Generation - #15
Sunshine of Your Love - Nowhere

Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (2004)

My Generation - #11
Sunshine of Your Love - #65

VH1 100 Greatest Songs of All Time (2000)

My Generation - #13
Sunshine of Your Love - #75

Dave Marsh - The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made (1989)

My Generation - #133
Sunshine of Your Love - Nowhere

Mojo 100 Records that Changed the World (2007)

My Generation - #44
Sunshine of Your Love - Nowhere

NME Top 100 Singles of All Time (1976)

My Generation - #5
Sunshine of Your Love - Nowhere

NME 100 Greatest Singles of All-Time (2002)

My Generation - #37
Sunshine of Your Love - Nowhere

Q Magazine 100 Songs That Changed the World (2003)

My Generation - #28
Sunshine of Your Love - Nowhere

Q Magazine 50 Greatest British Tracks (2005)

My Generation - #6
Sunshine of Your Love - Nowhere

Q Magazine 1001 Best Songs Ever (2003)

Sunshine of Your Love - #316
My Generation - #428

That's the only list I could find with "Sunshine of Your Love" higher than "My Generation". By far the weirdest list. "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" is higher than both at #218.

I could go on, but it won't get any better for "Sunshine of Your Love". This is why "My Generation" is #12 all-time at acclaimedmusic.net while "Sunshine of Your Love" is #461. I understand your criticisms of that website, but none of your criticisms apply when we're comparing two singles released two years apart from two British hard rock bands.

Here's a listener voted top songs of all time from 1987 on the most significant New York City AOR station. The two songs are close to each other.
