We all know that some stupid opinions on movies can stem from the most ordinary simple-minded moviegoer to the most educated film critic, and sometimes they can be so outrageously stupid that they'll stick with us for some time. So, why not post them for a good laugh?

I'm honestly too tired to think of some right now, but I'll definitely do it later.

yeah, I don't like Armond White either. He seems to actively hate most films he reviews and chastises other film critics for liking them.

What's sad about Armond White is that he used to be a really interesting critic. His piece on A.I. is second only to Jonathan Rosenbaum's essay as the best contemporary review of that movie (most of the more insightful stuff came only after people stopped using the movie as a punching bag and actually analyzed it). But it seems like writing for the NY Press has brought out his worst tendencies. Plus, he's become just a bad writer, period. He doesn't back up anything, only sniping films with 9th grade "I hate it because it sucks" barbs and constructing his arguments so poorly it's hard to even sort out the various half-burns because they've been jumbled together as if at random.

I actually agree with a lot of White's views, that Rotten Tomatoes turns film criticism into nothing more into an echo chamber that focuses on the percentage (this is also why I hate Pitchfork, even if they're not as emptily democratic), that too much paper writing and even a lot of high-profile blogging is really just an extension of a studio's marketing (I really enjoyed the latest Harry Potter, but Lisa Schwartzbaum's review in EW, which is owned by Time and therefore linked to Warner Bros, is so disgustingly fawning that it may as well have been written for the press kit) and that the middlebrow is always embraced above the daring. Then he acts more childish than even the most petulant man-boy bloggers, praises some films just to get attention and just generally acts like an asshole.

I mean, his review for the restored print of Every Man for Himself is good and shows he knows a thing or two. It's sad that he can't do that more than maybe once a year.

Pretty sure a review isn't why people don't go to see movies...

Hah yeah I was thinking of making that point first I read the topic.
I'm sure such RT reviewers get plenty of traffic on their own websites after writing such reviews.

Wow, yeah I just read his essay on A.I. and it is fantastic. I cannot believe this is the same writer that has posted so much bs all over the net.

I pretty much knew that good ol' Armond White was going to be brought up, but let's talk about little sputs of stupidity here and there from less-obvious critics, or people we know personally.

Confused Matthew, anyone?

I think Roger Ebert completely missed the point of Fight Club and admitted as such when he showed it at his lecture series in Boulder and the people there convinced him of his misreading.

OK, great. Except no one has said otherwise here.

You described the whole part about the Harry Potter movies as if people would be affected by a review, and it broke an IMAX record when it was released, but I don't see how they're connected when Harry Potter fans aren't avid movie watchers and critics normally.

Then that just turns him into a financially secure RYM user that downrates albums he thinks are overrated. Doesn't make him a genius, it makes him a giant troll who needs to fuck off. It's such a lazy niche to carve out for yourself, if he were that talented as a writer he wouldn't resort to something so effortless and almost intellectually void.
