Give film recommendations and suggestions here.

For example, I'm going to watch a movie with one of my friends tonight and we're not really sure what. We have a bunch of free rental coupons to a store with amazing selection, so finding a movie shouldn't be that hard. He was thinking something foreign, but he hasn't really explored foreign cinema so I'm think anything too "weird" (interpret that how you will). Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe The Sword of Doom, but I've already seen that and want to see something new, too, though I do want to rewatch that sometime. The film does not have to be Samurai/Japanese, that was just a thought... Suggestions?

I don't know too much about foreign cinema other than films based on martial arts. If you're a fan and think he might be, I'd recommend a classic - "Enter the Dragon." If not that, anything with Tony Jaa is a damn good watch just to see the art of Muay Thai.

la vita è bella, chungking express and city of god are all pretty good, not too weird/accessible foreign films

Whoa, that's what I ended up getting, just finished watching it in fact. I liked it a lot better the second time around, and he seemed to enjoy it as well. And Giallo, I've shown him Life is Beautiful and City of God before, but I was close to checking out some Wong Kar Wai.

I also rented the Piano Teacher, has anyone seen that?

lol that's what i originally was gonna rec to you before i said la haine. Yeah Haneke is a more accessible bet too, tho still ambiguous enough to challenge people. Piano Teacher is fantastic, probably my favorite Haneke, but content wise, really not something you wanna watch with a friend. You'll understand when you see it.

It depends on the time of movie the guy likes. For example, if he's not too keen on love stories, Chungking might be out. Also, La Vita e' bella is pretty sad (but still could be worth it). But City of God is good for any guy (or fan of that type of movie).

So, the Italian accent shows up in this forum, but Japanese is still out?

I'm not too savvy when it comes to DDD trends/likes, but has anyone seen Black Dynamite? Funniest movie I've seen in a VERY long while.

What happened to the post where you called 12 the All Along the Watchtower of Russian cinema? Did you delete that? You should not be so critical of your own writing.
