Honorable mentions:
These fall into a couple of main categories:
a) Guitarists who have had an immense amount of influence on rock guitar, but who themselves aren't considered rock guitarists (BB King, Carl Hogan, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, etc)
b) Guitarists whose style features a lot of rock influence, but not enough to consider them full-fledged rock players (SRV, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, etc)
Note #1: Some, like Mike Bloomfield and Chet Atkins, fall under both categories a) and b).
Note #2: Many of these guitarists, especially from category (b), straddle the line between rock and another genre, such as blues, country, or jazz. For the sake of list brevity and conciseness, they got left off, for various reasons; each case is examined on individual basis.

Stevie Ray Vaughan, Freddie King, Mike Bloomfield, Carl Hogan, Bill Jennings, Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith, Andy Tielman, Del Casher, Pops Staples, Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Bruce Cockburn, Glenn Branca, John McLaughlin, Chet Atkins, Albert Lee, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Bobby Parker, Albert King, Buddy Guy, BB King, Les Paul, Allan Holdsworth, Larry Coryell, Hank Garland, Tommy Emmanuel, Earl Hooker, John Lee Hooker, Al di Meola, Larry Carlton, Frank Gambale, Fred Frith, Marc Ribot, Ry Cooder, Sonny Landreth, Jeff Healey, Walter Trout, Rocky Athas, Junior Brown, John Martyn, Brian Setzer, Snowy White, Elder Utah Smith, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Richard Thompson, Brent Mason, Snooks Eaglin, Floyd McDaniel, Dave Beegle, Sonny Sharrock, James Blood Ulmer, Junior Barnard, Johnny Hiland, Elvin Bishop, Harvey Mandel, Shuggie Otis, Lowell George, Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Sly Williams/Jesse Allen, Glen Campbell, Jose Feliciano, Enver Izmailov, Stanley Jordan, Ernest Ranglin, Jimmy Bryant, Roy Nichols, Terje Rypdal, Clarence White, Bill Connors, Johnny Winter, Robben Ford, Danny Kirwan, Jeremy Spencer, Lonnie Donegan, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Bonnie Raitt, Bert Weedon, Stan Webb

***Clarification of Criteria:
Originality refers to a guitarist having a unique sound, pioneering a stylistic movement, or being an important link in the chain of rock guitar evolution.
Influence refers to a guitarist's impact on the musical community, on mainstream music, and especially on the guitar community. Guitarist's inspiration for beginning players is also considered.
Creativity refers to how prolific one is - longevity is considered, as are the number and quality of albums and collaborations, as well as the guitarist's songwriting/composition, as it all pertains to guitar (riffs, solos, improvisation, arrangements, etc.).
Skill contains Technique, Musicianship, and Versatility. Technique has to do with a guitarist's physical mastery of the instrument. Versatility has to do with the ability to play various guitaristic styles and musical genres, particularly those under the rock umbrella.

Generally, Originality and Influence are weighed most heavily, then Creativity, then Skill. Other "X-factor" criteria, such as Iconic Status, are considered and applied in appropriate cases.

Ace Frehley inspired an entire generation to pick up the guitar. And he's only one spot ahead of Syd Barrett. :?

So when will we be telling Echoes about this place?

That's an insult to Syd Barrett, who was a way more original and innovative guitarist and argubly more influencial, his guitar style defines psychedelic rock for a lot of people.

This is true, Syd did a lot of interesting stuff on the gitfiddle, such as the solo in "See Emily Play". Duly rated artist, kinda underrated guitarist.

The best thing is that if Echoes does find this place, we can all ignore him.

Hallelujah!

I do think we should have brief bios for each guitarist in the top 50 at least, similar to the all-genre list. Thoughts on this? I might start a separate bio thread that mirrors the one in the old forum.

Then who do you suggest he should be above? I can't see him getting any higher than his current place actually.

I have him third on my list of the greatest guitarists, behind Hendrix and Page.

i see only two ways of doing it: 1. hendrix, 2. berry, 3. the rest

or 1. hendrix 2. beck/clapton/page/blackmore/iommi, 3. berry

because it makes sense to group those guys together, and separating page from the rest by putting berry between them is inexplicable
