Think giving Black Sabbath (the song) the credit for an entire genre seems a bit off. It wasn't like metal bands popped up on every corner the minute the song was released..
Well of course not, it was too ahead of it's time. And why would that matter anyway? Doesn't change the fact that it's still the greatest and most important metal song. Sooooooooo many future metal artists took something from that song. It is the very essence of the genre.

Definitely an important track within the style, but Paranoid (the song) was a far bigger hit and probably ultimately did more to popularize the genre
It was more popular due to it's simpler sound, but I dont see it as being a greater metal song at all. If anything, N.I.B. did the 'short upbeat catchy riff' thing first (and better).

I agree, and much of the groundwork for metal had been done before "Black Sabbath".
Irrelevant.
Black Sabbath was the turning point. It was the culmination of everything from the preceding years - Link Wray, The Kinks, Cream, Hendrix, The Who, etc. All those guys were hinting at it, but Sabbath were the ones who made it viable, into an entity of it's own.
I don't know a single metal artist who doesn't consider Sabbath's debut to be the first metal album.
