Well of course not, it was too ahead of it's time. And why would that matter anyway? Doesn't change the fact that it's still the greatest and most important metal song. Sooooooooo many future metal artists took something from that song. It is the very essence of the genre.

It was more popular due to it's simpler sound, but I dont see it as being a greater metal song at all. If anything, N.I.B. did the 'short upbeat catchy riff' thing first (and better).

Black Sabbath was the turning point. It was the culmination of everything from the preceding years - Link Wray, The Kinks, Cream, Hendrix, The Who, etc. All those guys were hinting at it, but Sabbath were the ones who made it viable, into an entity of it's own.
I don't know a single metal artist who doesn't consider Sabbath's debut to be the first metal album.

It was a turning point. There were other turning points both before them and after them. Some consider them the first metal artist and some don't, but regarding influence, it doesn't even matter. Whether or not they're the first metal artist is just a question of how things are labeled. Either way, they made innovations that were followed by others, and thus were influential. But the part of the post that you didn't quote was the most important part:
