Moa Anbessa by Getatchew Mekurya + The Ex + Guests

A brilliant fusion of ethio-jazz and punk rock which works surprisingly well. In a shell this is just Ethiopian horns over the guitar-bass-drums of the Ex but its really awesome. There is a very healthy compromise between the respective styles of these two very different artists(though the ethio-jazz probably is a bit more dominant). At one moment you might be basking in the power of the celebratory Ethiopian fanfare, and the next moment the whole affair will take a different turn as the foreboding anarcho-punk guitars become more prominent. Most of the time this listens more like a jazz album than punk however, which is fine by me because this Getatchew character(who is apparently some kind of legend in Ethiopia idk) is amazing.

Hey guys if I want something similar to The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, what should I go for?

Similar in what way? I've never heard anything quite like it. But I am going to recommend Mingus' later album Let My Children Hear Music, which has Hobo Ho on it (his best track), and which is a similar explosion of styles without any lack of cohesiveness.

Similar in, well, everything I guess. Similar like you would recommend Wolf Parade to someone who likes Modest Mouse. Thanks for the speedy rec. Yeah, I guess "similar" is a tough request. I haven't heard any other album that sounds anything like it. I've been obsessing over it for a while now and have been looking for something with the same energy and feeling.

Hobo Ho will end your world. The sound of the album is distinct from Black Saint but you'll find they share many virtues.

thanks for this rec. i actually got it from the link you posted in the '70s album thread. i'm listening right now, and even though i haven't finished it yet, it can tell you it's already one of my favorite jazz albums. it's so rich and beautiful.

I like everything on Sinner Lady more than Hobo Ho, though i really really like Hobo Ho and it's gone through a phase of my most listened to song for a month. I also think Moanin is a much better track than Hobo Ho.

Man, Hobo Ho is just like this perfect argument against everything that's wrong with most free jazz. That song is how you do chaos, how you have a song fall apart at the seams in an aesthetically controlled manner—to fall apart at the seams you have to have seams to begin with.

Anyway that is a respectable opinion and Black Saint is probably the better start to finish album, but for me Hobo Ho is second only to Bach's Ich Ruf Zu Dir, Herr Jesu Christ in terms of sheer musical greatness.

it's nice how people who dont listen to much music respond sometimes though. During the phase where I used to play Hobo Ho a lot, a friend had come over and hearing it and commented on sounding like porn music
