Woody Guthrie To Receive Pioneer Award At Songwriters Hall Of Fame Gala

http://www.songhall.org/news/entry/wood ... _fame_gala

Previously Announced Inductees Include Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Seger, Don Schlitz, Harvey Schmidt & Tom Jones and Jim Steinman

New York, NY- May 1, 2012 – Woody Guthrie will be the recipient of the prestigious Pioneer Award, to be presented at the 43rd Annual Induction and Awards Dinner slated for Thursday, June 14th at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City, Songwriters Hall of Fame Chairman Jimmy Webb announced today.

The Pioneer Award was established in 2012 to honor the career of a historic creator of a major body of musical work that has been a major influence on generations of songwriters.

“This year, we join musicians and songwriters from around the world in celebrating Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday,” commented SHOF Chairman Jimmy Webb. “One of the great songwriters of all time, we look forward to acknowledging his brilliance with the first-ever Songwriters Hall of Fame Pioneer Award.”

Guthrie wrote more than 3,000 songs throughout his career, including American staples “This Land Is Your Land,” “This Train Is Bound For Glory,” “Pastures of Plenty” and “Pretty Boy Floyd.” First known as “the Dustbowl Balladeer,” his musical and compositional style has influenced generations of contemporary songwriters in every genre, from folk to rock. Recognized for his monumental contributions and achievements in American culture, Guthrie was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 1977, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and in 1999 he was honored with The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2012, to commemorate what would be Guthrie’s centennial year, Woody Guthrie Publications and the Grammy® Museum are collaborating on a year-long celebration from California to the New York Island and across the pond, with concerts, exhibits, educational conferences and album releases, among other honorary celebrations.

Previously announced inductees at this year’s SHOF event include Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Seger, Don Schlitz, Harvey Schmidt & Tom Jones and Jim Steinman. The Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Bette Midler and the Abe Olman Publisher Award will be presented to Lance Freed. “Stand By Me” will receive the Towering Song Award with Ben E. King honored with the Towering Performance Award. The Hal David Starlight Award will be presented to Ne-Yo.

Ticket Information:
Tickets for the Songwriters Hall of Fame event begin at $1000 each, and are available through Buckley Hall Events, (212) 573-6933. Net proceeds from the event will go toward the Songwriters Hall of Fame programs.

The story changed again as it always does with the Song Hall (sigh). Steve Miller (not Lyle Lovett) ended up inducting Gordon Lightfoot.

Detroit rocker Bob Seger, Canadian folk icon Gordon Lightfoot and longtime Meat Loaf collaborator Jim Steinman were among those inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame last night. The Hall also inducted Don Schlitz, who won a Grammy in 1978 for Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler," and the Broadway duo of Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones (The Fantasticks). Three-time Grammy winner R&B singer Ne-Yo was presented with the Hal David Starlight Award, which celebrates an exceptional young songwriter.

"I can never repay him," said Meat Loaf on Steinman, who wrote all the lyrics and music to Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out 0f Hell II and also penned Bonnie Tyler's 1983 hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart."

The Songwriters Hall of Fame was established in 1969 and has exhibits within the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. An online archive of inductees is available on the Hall's website.

Chic has been nominated 6 times now for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011) and once for the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2011). If any more artists will be joining that short list of people who have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in the same year, it will most likely be Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards.

Chic members nominated for 2011 Songwriters Hall of Fame

Nile Rodgers/Bernard Edwards

With the late Bernard Edwards, fellow producer Nile Rodgers formed Chic--one of the most important bands of the disco era. Both “Le Freak” and “Good Times” went to No. 1 on the pop charts, prompting Rodgers and Edwards to produce and write for other artists on their Atlantic Records roster, including Sister Sledge, whose “We Are Family” was a huge hit--and remade by Rodgers as a benefit recording for his “We Are Family Foundation” after 9-11. But Rodgers and Edwards also wrote and produced for other artists including Diana Ross (her hits “Upside Down” and “I’m Coming Out"), and Rodgers went on to compose soundtracks while continuing his songwriting and production efforts.

Key songs in the Rodgers and Bernard catalogs include “Good Times,” “I’m Coming Out,” “Le Freak,” “Upside Down” and “We Are Family.”

ARTISTS WHO WERE INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AND THE SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME IN THE SAME YEAR

01. 1986 - Chuck Berry
02. 1997 - Joni Mitchell
03. 1999 - Bruce Springsteen
04. 2000 - James Taylor
05. 2010 - Jesse Stone
06. 2011 - Leon Russell

Wow, that strikes me as amazing that Costello and Davies aren't already in. I suppose the Songwriters Hall is a little too focused on commercial success (and US commercial success at that) for those guys to be automatics. But, wow, they're both just such great songwriters.

Lots of deserving names there. Would be happy to see Covay, Sloan/Barri, Lambert/Potter, Temperton, King, or Lynne get in. The Fleetwood Mac members are deserving, but it's weird to me to have them as one entry since even though they were all in one band, they rarely wrote together.

I'll have to look up the resumes of a couple of those.
