I did this with movies. It's pretty straight forward.

What are the quintessential bands for major cities/places? For example, Red Hot Chili Peppers just scream L.A.

despite being the birthplace of Michael Jackson, Indiana is defined by John Mellencamp. i know its not a city, but really idk who defines Indianapolis. really, Indy is pretty different from most of Indiana to begin with. in any case, Mellencamp, Hoosiers, and James Whitcomb Riley are Indiana in terms of art/entertainment (as much as Reggie Miller, Bob Knight and Larry Bird are Indiana in terms of sports).

Oh quit splitting hairs you old fogey.

Boston could be either, well, Boston or 70s Aerosmith.

Maybe House of Pain or Marky Mark too.

Saying that a state is not a city is splitting hairs?

Can I assume you aren't a fan of Boston any more than I'm a fan of Long Island?
