I don't know what to do. I have no sort of direction with guitar at all. I can play some songs, but I won't be able to do certain basics.

then why don't you start there? what do you mean by basics? alt. picking? because that takes years of discipline to get down right.

I'm not really sure. I have a pretty varied taste. I'd just like to get decent so that I could play a range of styles.

EDIT: Misread the question.

I could give you some resources on scales, chords, theory and whatnot if you're interested.

Sorry i didnt get back to you sooner

Plenty of stuff bout chords and theory there are also some cool backing tracks on the first cd plus its by guthrie govan so its guaranteed to be good

Chord Chemistry is very intimidating, ive owned it for years and have barely scratched the surface but there is a wealth of amazing material in it. You can take any example and run with it for weeks

Good site for scales and chords

So what rigs are peeps playing with at the moment?

My current set up is:

Modded Yamaha Pacifica 112M > Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion > Electroharmonix Metal Muff > Electro Harmonix Little Big Muff > Behringer DD400 (x2) > Laney TF-800 w/ Laney GS212 Guitar Speaker Cab

I can get some pretty awesome, intense Post-Rock wall of sound stuff with this rig.

Parker PM-10 > Laney 120x head > Laney Cab. Not sure what speakers are in it. The head sucks, want a new one. Thinking of getting a peavey bandit. The Laney does have a pretty awesome metal tone, but it doesn't have good classic rock tones, but I guess I'll need tubes for that kinda warmth.

my pedal bag containing a holy grail, boss digital delay dd-7 and boss chromatic tuner (plus other leads and what not) got stolen at a show the other week. Somewhat devasting, however I think I'll replace the dd-7 with an mxr carbon copy delay or something. have any of you guys used one? i was thinking maybe get an electro-harmonix memory man, but it's a bit pricey for me right now. plus i'm trying to steer away from digital pedals. any suggestions? i've been told the mxr distortion pedal has a great tone which i'm also looking at... oh yeah, and totally getting insurance on all my gear now
