2012 Songs- Wanta B.1.
John Talabot- So Will Be Now...- Talabot has become a must-hear artist for me. I listen to all his singles and even look forward to his remixes (which are for the most part always sublime). I didn't hear this track until I listened to fIN all the way through and was shaken to my core when this came on and closed out the album and it stands by itself even stronger. I hear news where various dj's drop this at clubs and it slays, but it's also fit for bedroom and night drive listens. The vocal sample is cut and recontextualized in layers where it brings a new light to the emotionality of it all. So whether you hear it at 4AM at Fabric or laying on your bed after wasting yet another day where you did absolutely nothing constructive, it works magically. Though wait a minute, you listened to this song, so your life automatically progressed.

Andres- New 4 U- There is a kind of track for music listeners where it sits coolly on its feel good vibes. This music is not there to give you a jolt of energy, or evoke strong emotions, but to chill you internally, to free up your clouded thoughts. I once played this for dddchat, upon which Kaleb said, "this is the kind of music I'm gonna play all day when I get my own place". Heard that.

The Walkmen- Heaven- Will stand as one of the best songs they've written with "the Rat" and "In the New Year", with the forward propulsiveness of the Strokes' "Modern Age". I don't know how long the band will stay together, but no band of their kind should have lasted this long. Not even a brief hiatus or mention of side projects, it's totally inspiring. Knowing that, the song almost feels like a farewell song for the band enduring so long, and adds to its poignancy.

Zola Jesus- In Your Nature (David Lynch Remix)- Zola is like our own little Lady Gaga without the annoying factor. I haven't even heard the original to this, nor do I really want to because this version seems so right in spirit. Meditatively dark but still accessibly poppy with a hint of optimism, just like Lynch's own films.

Spiritualized- Hey Jane- I wasn't really convinced with any single from their last album that that was their comeback record, this one however has earned a spot as one of the best things they've done. Joyously celebratory and containing every aspect that we love about the legendary band.

Huxley- Let it Go- Immense. The go to house track this year that you will not be able to get out of your MIIIIiiiiIIIIIiiiind.

Sleigh Bells- You Lost Me-Sleigh Bells' new record is actually more interesting than their debut and here is one of the reasons why. The gloriously brash footstompers marks their signature, but there's something about when they dip into sweeter territory that feels entirely exclusive to them. It's like dream pop coaxed with a pulsating noisiness that could go off at any minute, gorgeous and dangerous at the same time.

Azealia Banks- Jumanji- To recognize just how talented she is, do a side by side comparison with this instrumental if you can. If anything, the rapping is so on point here that it transcends whatever it's being supported by. Where Nicki Minaj is slowly becoming easy to pinpoint, Banks is still surprising us on every corner with seemingly endless tricks up her sleeve.

Interface & Minus- Hardwork- Not really dubstep nor drum n bass, but definitely BASS. The speed here is the absolute key, as the sped up tempo makes it not fall into the stereotypical rhythmic patterns of dubstep and dnb, and almost approaches techno in a way. It's a meta-edm track that is meta-enjoyable.

AlunaGeorge- You Know You Like It- Like Toro y Moi's convincing "All Alone" for the 80's, this is a perfect embodiment of 90's era R&B with modern flourishes that could make it easily fit in heavy radio rotation with either decade.
