Here's something I was thinking about while bored at work... What are some of the quintessential movies for the major cities. I don't just mean the movie is filmed in a location or takes place there, but a movie that is tied to the city--it couldn't take place anywhere else and is essentially tied to the city.

To give an example:
Philadelphia - Rocky. OK, as annoying as it is for Philadelphians to be only associated with Rocky, they are and they often embrace it. It's blue color, it's the bicentennial (1976) and it's the scrappy underdog.

Some others I was thinking about:
Los Angeles - Chinatown. The movie is about many things, but it's definitely about the somewhat questionable beginnings of LA.
For a more recent example, Drive. Lots of movies are set in LA because a lot of movies are filmed there. But Drive seems to go out of its way to remind you it is in LA. Perhaps it's because the main character is a stunt driver and can't stray far from Hollywood. But from the opening scene featuring the Clippers to the driving past LA's sprawling strip malls (the stickup, the pizza shop and the car repair shop are all in strip malls) to the bad guys worrying about those out East encroaching this film does not want you to forget where it takes place.

Wilmington, DE - Fight Club. OK, it wasn't filmed there and it never mentions Wilmington, but the book takes place there and the movie only makes sense if it's Wilmington (because of the banks).

Anyone have any others (for these cities or others)?

interesting idea... and we probably shouldn't limit ourselves to cities, but include other places, too, no?

Vertigo is certainly a legendary film that uses its locations expertly but I don't know if it's necessarily "the" San Francisco movie any more than are, say, The Maltese Falcon or Bullitt or Dirty Harry. Certainly it's not about San Francisco the way that more recent films like Milk or Zodiac are (or the way Chinatown is about Los Angeles, even though it's not based on real events the way those films are).

I assume we all agree that Baltimore/The Wire stacks right up against LA/Chinatown and Manhattan/Manhattan right?

Chicago: The Untouchables
Cleveland: Major League
the forgotten wastes of southern Missouri: Winter's Bone

London: Blow-Up
Tokyo: Tokyo Story duh, although I'm sure you'd have to pick something else (Lost in Translation?) for a view of the beautiful monstrosity of modern Tokyo.

It's easier to do this with bands than it is with movies.
