They are MUCH more known for their studio work, I'm not sure their 'greatness' stature is really that significant. They were awesome live, but I don't know how much influence they've had.

I think we should restart this list, and take 'stage presence' out of the criteria.
Actually, I would probably have the criteria as only improv, acclaim, and consistency. Anyone agree with that?

it should still count, but only as a tie breaker, not very important.

Definitely checking those out when I get home from work.
If it's anything like the Memphis '72 performance, I'll be in love with it.

Yeah this list is in disarray. Needs to be reworked somehow.

You actually got me thinking - Hendrix definitely takes Steve in stage presence, not even debatable.
Now improvisation is a little harder. Jimi was incredibly fearless with his improv. When it didn't work, it sounded odd and unsettling. When it DID work, however, the result was absolutely astounding. Vaughan was a great improviser too, though. But he tends to recycle a lot of the same blues phrases quite a lot, which can sometimes get annoying. But, just like with Jimi, his high points are unbelievable. I'd probably give improv to Hendrix overall, but it could go either way, imo.
Consistency is obviously Steve by a landslide.

So that leaves reputation as a live guitarist. And I'd probably give that to Jimi too. I mean, all the British guitar gods like Clapton, Beck, and Townshend were all raving about him in the early days.
