Didn't impress me nearly as much as "Kick The Chair", but still that was awesome.

You're not listening hard enough then  Kick the Chair is just footwork, simple footwork at that.

Kick the Chair is difficult, but not outrageously so. That section of My Kingdom though is insane.

Well this is the fact that it's VINNIE playing it, the Zeus of popular music drumming, and it just sounds so killer to hear some metal from a guy who's done everything from fusion to rock to jazz and beyond.
In that context I guess it makes it a little more "impresive" to me, if that makes any sense.

While we're on Vinnie though, Joe's Garage is really overrated, imo. Drumming did nothing for me there.
His performance from the Zildjian Clinic in '83 is still my favorite thing from him, bar none.

I'm not sure if you're referring to Joe's Garage or Vinnie's performance at Zildjian 83....?
And if it's the latter, I'm not sure if you're implying that it's unimpressive.

Sorry, bear with me here...

This is such a badass tune:

Urgh, "Monument" could possibly be my favourite Fates Warning tune, it just has all the right elements. Okay, best Ray Alder era song, at least.

That is some damn fine drumming on those, Yngtchie. I think the vocalist tries too hard to sound like Geoff Tate and comes across as annoying to me.

While we're on underrated/overlooked metal drummers...

On those early albums, Alder's style was kinda tiring. More than competent, no doubt, but to me he was a step down from John Arch, who did possess one of the most distinctive voices in metal.

Alder's singing style is less hysterical nowadays, leading to a more listenable sound.

I just played a jazz/swing treatment of "Where Eagles Dare". It was nice.

So I'm getting the impression that Bruford's work with KC is a little better than his work with Yes.

Tentative stab at a best of Bruford in rock list, based on the albums I own/have heard:

1. Heart of the Sunrise
2. Larks
3. South Side of the Sky
4. One More Red Nightmare
5. Providence
6. Red
7. Discipline
8. Roundabout
9. Indiscipline
10. Requiem
