Right now I think my favorite is volume 2. Also, the tags that the disc came with were more detailed than I imagine people would want, so I flattened them out a bit to mix well with last.fm. For example, all tracks that said Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five or Louis Armstrong and His Hot Seven or Louis Armstrong and His Orchestra I changed to simply Louis Armstrong.

The biggest blind spot of the collection is obviously Coltrane who the compiling critic had a bias against in favor of Ornette Coleman, and the one Coltrane selection here really isn't representative, but I imagine most people who would be interested in this set have easy access to the essential Coltrane stuff anyway.

Mingus Ah Um took a few listens to click, but I now love it. It really brought out the solidarity of Mingus's bass for me too.
