i haven't voted... and probably won't... but i've considered voting "other" for flamenco... since the flamenco i've been listening is not "folk".

interestingly, i've noticed most people here use "folk" as something completely different from the way i understand it... something along the lines of acoustic indie music... ??

Yeah, that's something that throws me off from time to time. I've seen all this acoustic indie stuff categorized as "indie folk" when most of the songs don't really have any easily detectable folk roots besides an acoustic guitar, and that doesn't mean anything by itself.

Well there is a difference between traditional folk music which is regionally and traditionally based and contemporary folk music like Dylan, Nick Drake, and the like.

sure hope not, lolz

acoustic indie folk is some of the worst music ever. however - that being said, there's a lot of brilliant psychedelic folk and free-folk going on in the 00's (borne down from the traditions of british folk of the 70's and comus and the like)

Yousef ??
yousef !!

joe and rashed, i see... it seems this contemporary folk music (i.e., the so-called urban folk) is more of a concrete stylistic movement than anything else... so the definition's changing...

btw, i like comus a lot... which modern artists were influenced by them? i should prolly check them out.

Simon Finn was a contemporary to Comus. He plays a very apocalyptic brand of psychedelic folk. I'm pretty sure Animal Collective were influenced by Comus. Check out their album Sung Tongs (if you haven't already).

George... listening to AC... I can't picture it

I think they cited the Incredible String Band as a big influence on Sung Tongs, and I think Comus too, but I can't recall
