Just love all the drumming on Rainbow Rising, the whole album has great energetic drumming.

This song really needs to be on here, and quite high, it was the first drum instrumental to hit the charts ever! It reached #3 un the UK and #49 in the US, that alone is a reason to be on the list.

This perfectly illustrates why I love early Deep Purple. Even in a 3-minute song, you get huge contributions from everyone. Awesome double bass playing from Ian (in the early 70s no less!), bass bridge with Wah Wah from Roger, Ritchie's riffing, Jon's distorted organ solo, and Ian's vocal stylings.

Also another reason why Machine Head is probably my all-time favorite rock studio album next to "In the Court of the Crimson King."

WGFA is about as iconic a drum performance as there is possible.

Moon was the Jimi Hendrix of the drum set.

Well, the word 'iconic' implies things like influence and impact and such, in which WGFA clearly overtakes Achilles.
WGFA is prime Keith Moon.
Achilles isn't prime Bonham (though it's still great).

But I think Bonham has many better performances.

WFGA is easily Keith Moon's best and top 10 mandatory. Achilles is arguably Bonham at his best and there can be a pretty good case made for it being number 1 on a greatest rock drum performance list, or it could replace Moby Dick. Currently there is no criteria for this list so there is nothing I can work with and it's not a list I'm currently interested in editing yet until greatest is done, greatest of all genres, and then work a bit on most skilled.

Wow, you really think Achilles could be #1? I can see top 10, or top 5 maybe, but #1 is a stretch, imo.
I'd think that something like Dazed And Confused or or Moby Dick would be much greater and more iconic overall. After all, it was Zeppelin's first four albums (mostly) that influenced and inspired so many.

That said, I dont think any Bonham performance should be above WGFA.

Achilles mainly has to do with how influential and impactual the bass pedal was in the song, I don't know why it was, but I know it was and it was a damn huge deal, arguably the biggest single deal from a rock track's drumline
