As someone who isn't a massive Dream Theater fan, Portnoy is freaking amazing. I see what you mean about the footwork.

That Peart solo was fantastic.

you guys must be kidding me if you saw that YYZ performance right now ?!! thats the performance that got Peart really noticed from a live drummer point of view. Highly highly acclaimed, and I believe won awards in the 80s. Thats also the best YYZ in existence, the 1st Rush performance I saw, and still my favorite performance by them by a country mile. Geddy is on absolute fire there

edit: also, how can you not see the parts in that solo that were used in O baterista 20 years later. What's wrong with you guys !!

I don't know, I'm pretty sure he uses the gladstone technique to accomplish most of what he does with his left hand, but I'm pretty convinced Jojo can do whatever he wants with his left hand regardless of what technique he uses. (Although I saw his dvd and was left with the impression that his technique is pretty much perfect.) He's one of the most dynamic guys i can think of.

Yeah Jojo's left hand is godly, it's like Pridgen's right foot, if not better. I can never figure out what hand technique he's using, so much finger involvement, he gets the speed and accuracy with it though, and constantly changing the style to suit the speed. Extremely versatile. He may have the best traditional grip technique I've ever seen. Rich is acclaimed but man that Mayer....If only I could figure it out, I still have trouble getting my traditional grip up to speed while keeping a relatively low volume

One of my favorite drum performances has always been in the song Blind Faith by Dream Theater. While not out of this world complex, I find it outstanding. I would give it a solid 7 or 8.

Anyone else into this?
