Highly agree.

Sidenote: Rodney Crowell's Fate's Right Hand is probably the best country album I've ever heard.

Shouldn't Houston Kid be his highest ranked album though? I could be wrong, but that seems to be his most acclaimed.
I'm not really knowledgeable on Americana though.

Well, acclaim wasn't used as an element ( criteria ) of the Americana list. Many Americana artists live their lives constantly on the road having a solid following but never recieve what could be called 'acclaim' on more than a regional level, yet the music they produce is of the highest order as pertains this genre. Having said all that 'Aint Livin Long Like This' was Crowell's debut album and though it didn't do well commercially Rodney had a huge following because of those songs.

I have 'Houston Kid' and will give a few more listens and move it up. It does have an amazing
autobiographical nature to it. FYI, 'Diamonds and Dust' is by far Crowell's most acclaimed
record with 5 number one singles to its credit but is straight country (not Americana) and a wonderful listen if you have a taste and the ears for that genre. Check out both of my Americana lists, there is a wealth of fine music to be discovered there and artists like Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Joe Ely, Dave Alvin and the great country blues of Ray Wylie Hubbard.

Thanks for your interest.

My dad's a huge Hubbard fan, but I have limited familiarity with most of these artists.
I've been deciding between Houston Kid and Diamonds & Dust after listening to Fate's Right Hand. From what I've read, the former gets a lot of talk as Crowell's magnum opus, and I'd even heard of it before I really knew much about him. FWIW.

Thumbs up to your Dad, a kindred spirit. Hubbard gets me in the music and especially in the writing. He is a first class lyricist with a lot to say. Here is an example:

"Knives of Spain,"

"If I had some poet's wings
I would fly to New Orleans
I'd rhyme my trials and misdeeds
So if you cut the words they would bleed
And in the night when I'm all alone
And the sadness goes to the bone
I'd make the words in the refrain
As lethal as the knives of Spain."

Doesn't get more real than that !
