seeing Ritchie Havens' freedom is making me think of some of the best hard and furious rhythm driven songs in rock. 3 other that immediately pop up in my mind is Big Love by Lindsay Buckingham and of course Drowned and Pinball Wizard by Pete Townshend. What else ?

Is anybody still interested in doing this. Maybe something like this for the top ten:

1. Link Wray
2. Jimmy Nolen
3. Steve Cropper
4. Chuck Berry
5. Tony Iommi
6. Messina/Willis/White
7. Keith Richards
8. Pete Townshend
9. Cornell Dupree
10. Jimmy Page

I wouldn't call him top ten, though. He's easily second tier worthy.

Why wouldn't you call him top ten? In terms of rhythm playing he's one of the most influential players in metal of the past 30 years.

Well, in order to be in the top ten, he has to beat the others out, right? That's why I said that.

Hetfield is second only to Iommi when it comes to influential metal riffery. Way chopsier, too.

Yeah I'd think Hetfield is a mandatory top 10.

With a title like this it probably should include at least some non-rock guitar players

Not a bad idea, but that list would be a hard one to make. We'd have to include country players, as well.
