I've got Nostalghia next on my list, how does that one hold up after Stalker and Andrei (the only other Tarkovskys I've seen)?

It's the least good Tarkovsky film I've seen, but I still thought it was very good.

i always keep my eye out for screenings of stalker, because i figure they have to happen occasionally in new york city, and i finally saw a flyer for one on a bulletin board in my school's film center. i was so excited, and it's showing a few blocks from where i live! but then i read on and turns out it shows the fucking evening that i fly home for spring break. dsfjdaogogbdjkgh

it stupefied me the first time i saw it, but i grew to appreciate it more later on... i think drew is the bigger fan of it nowadays, though i don't think he explained why exactly he got to love it so much, other than more attention to detail, if i remember well... btw i also recommend to rewatch "nostalghia" some time, too, and in a more awake state, preferably (-:

I'll explain why I like it so much the next day I happen to feel like a Christian.

I now have a friend equally as enamored of Tarkovsky as I am. And also equally as enamored of Joyce as I am. And he seems to have seen the light of Bach, too. Now I just need to get him reading Emerson.

I had a discussion with George earlier about the Soviet/Russian tradition of films going from Dovzhenko and Pudovkin to Tarkovsky and Paradjanov up to Sokurov. And I remember saying that it wasn't that easy for me to pick up on exactly why Sokurov is considered so strongly within that tradition of filmmaking. All I noticed is that some of his work has a similar personal and spiritual dimension to them. But as for their visual style, to me they look entirely different.

Haven't heard his name mentioned here on DDD yet, so I would like to bring some people's attention to Andrei Zvyagintsev, a relatively new Russian director with only three features to his name, but in his first two films you can clearly see that Tarkovsky was this guy's idol. Especially in The Banishment. His films are definitely not as spiritually significant and are not as iconic as Tarkovsky's films, but the pictorial influences are spot on. The similarities are absolutely uncanny. Every Tarkovsky fan must see this film.

I love watching films by directors who pay tribute their masters, and The Banishment is way up there.

I've seen The Return of Zvyagintsev's films, which I liked quite a lot.

I liked it as well, but didn't you find that blue filter just too annoying and unnecessary after a while? Also, what the fuck was that father's deal? I highly recommend you give The Banishment a whirl, see what that does for ya.
