What is the way to figure out the best fingerings for something like this? Just your own trial and error?

<3 couperin

ultimately it's whatever feels right for you and what is most efficient...

but if there's anything in particular you want to ask, i can tell you how i'd do it, for example...

PS: same tab is available here also - http://www.classtab.org/couperin_les_ba ... ieuses.txt

Okay so on that one you posted, how about the first two measures? (Particularly the second half of each).

i assume you're asking for left-hand fingerings. this is how i'd do it... sorry it's all crooked now, but i hope you get the idea...

Wow thanks, that makes a lot more sense than the nonsense I was doing.

so i was attempting to learn this song:
because i found this tab...http://www.johnfahey.com/TabTulip.htm

but is it just me or is that tab wrong? From the second bar there's a bend it misses. I guess it's for a different version of the song? anyways, i might try to learn it later by ear (something i need to work on) because it's still similiar.

until then. does anyone know a good fingerpicking song in standard tuning to learn? Ideally, one without that sort of alternating thumb pulse found in a lot of fahey songs, because i feel i'm pretty decent at that sort of thing but want to expand to more complex fingerings...

I'm thinking about buying a guitar to keep in my office and noodle on when I'm stuck at work late. I want to spend less than $200 so I don't cry if it gets stolen. Maybe a used Squier. A semi-hollow would be nice too. Any ideas out there?

I wasn't intending to upload this one, but here's some noodling, warts and all:

Somewhat recent, I s'pose. I grew it so that I can stroke it while pondering.

Suggestions for what to play next?

I'd love to, but all the good backing tracks I've got feature all these chord changes, and I'm terrible when it comes to hearing those, so any attempt at recording over a backing track requires long preparation that has never resulted in anything satisfactory before. I have not improved as far as knowing theory goes since the last time I tried to play over a backing track.

ah ok, no biggie. your playing is obviously good and you have solid technique. judging from your playing i think you could adapt to playing over changes, its just a matter of hitting the right scale when the key changes. guthrie's creative guitar books go into that sort of stuff if you're interested in it.

i was thinking of throwing up a recording of myself soon but ive come to hate recording things, every time the red light turns on i make 10x more mistakes than i usually do. i've played live before and had no problem with that but recording just makes me freeze up :/
