I admire the effort, but Stevie and Luther are WAY too high, my man.

The top 3 are Cooke, Wilson, and McPhatter, in any order.

Personally I'd have the top 5 like this...

1. Sam Cooke
2. Jackie Wilson
3. Clyde McPhatter
4. Ray Charles
5. Otis Redding/Marvin Gaye

Freddie Mercury is the #1 vocalist!

Dammit Greg...
Fred could sing anything, but this is the r&b list.

Anyway I'd round out the top 10 with Gaye, Williams, Wonder, Burke and maybe Brown (influence and originality off the charts).

A few points:

I can not imagine any singer in the first place on the list not to be Wonder.

Maybe you're right about Cooke, he belongs in the top 5. But I think Clyde is between 10-15

Definitely, Jackson belongs in the top 10, his first two solo albums as an adult - Off The Wall/Thriller - are referenced in the history of R&B/Soul, not to mention his time at Motown as a solo and with his brothers.

I still think Vandross may be in the top 10, he won four Grammy Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, great voice.

Why should Wonder be above Cooke?

Wonder has won seven Grammy's Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. It is one of the biggest names in Motown. After Jackson, Wonder is the most popular singer in the history of black music.

Popularity doesn't matter here.
