what are some good albums by sam cooke? all i've heard by him is portait of a legend: 1951-1964

The guitar solo on Maggot Brain just demolished me last night. /cliche

I honestly think that there are better guitar performances on that album.

But as a whole record, I think it's up there with the greatest guitar albums ever.

I think he only had two proper studio albums in Night Beat and Ain't That Good News, and you should listen to both, as they are both incredible. The Portraits of a Legend Comp (the best compilation ever btw) takes care of most of the great non-album singles and choice early career material.

So I finally got my first soul album today, it's a genre I figured I've ignored too long. Got Aretha's Lady Soul and also have Curtis Mayfield's Curtis in the post, will see how I get on.

What made you settle on those, avery? Not that I can fault it (though I don't listen to much Aretha - perhaps I will follow your lead on that) particularly but perhaps there are more obvious choices. What's Going On, Innervisions spring to mind (more with Curtis in mind here, though I have championed that record for many years now).

Nick - I was going to get I Never Loved a Man the Way I Loved You and Superfly, but those 2 I picked were cheaper on amazon and are only slightly less loved from what I saw, so I plumped for them instead.

I was reading the reviews of RYMers I generally trust musically and I saw mixed reviews for What's Goin' On. I know I should get that pretty soon, but Aretha and Curtis had far more positive reviews from people I trusted and I didn't want to get WGO and then found it rubbed me the wrong way or something, putting me off the genre a bit. So I'm gonna wait til I've given these 2 a good listen to befor eI judge.

Also, another thing was sold me was the length, I generally prefer shorter albums and both are under 40 minutes, which pleases me.

P.S. What's the best James Brown record to start with, I know Live at the Apollo is his most famous, but I'd rather go with a studio album or a fair sized, large best of compilation, I guess.
