I've heard a lot people say that this was one of the best years for movies in a while. I haven't seen everything that's supposed to be good, but I think I'm inclined to agree from what I have seen. Nothing like 1999, but still pretty good.

So, not to go all Ahawk on you guys, but what's yo fave?

Drive for me.

The Tree of Life is a movie that appeals to me on a lot of levels, but which is ultimately seriously flawed. It's still a fantastic movie, one of the best of the year, but it's not my favorite.

Melancholia is probably the movie that most powerfully affected me from this year. Yet, every time I think about watching it again, I'm turned off. Not because of any defects in it as a movie, but because it's just not something I think I can learn from a second time through (unless I saw it in a theater, perhaps).

Drive is ultimately a movie that is highly entertaining, thematically deep, and more enduring than either of the above.

Since those are the only three movies from the year that I've seen so far that have any hope of being my favorite, Drive gets the nod.

Need to see The Artist, A Separation, The Turin Horse, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Shame.

The Tree of Life, Melancholia, The Skin I Live In, and Drive are all major films. I like them a lot, but like Pnoom I'm leaning towards Drive right now.

Midnight in Paris, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Descendants, and Moneyball were all mildly entertaining but I will probably never return to any of them.

Did not like Hugo at all.

Martha Marcy May Marlene should have been included.

Done.

I think I was going to do another edition of this poll with all the blockbuster films anyway...

Drive was the only great film I saw this year. It was also one of three films that I saw at all this year. Midnight in Paris was very entertaining and wonderful, Beginners was so so bad.

Yeah, the only movies I've seen are The Tree of Life, Bridesmaids, and Horrible Bosses, the latter two just hanging out/drinking with friends. They're certainly funny and entertaining enough to serve that purpose but they're not what I would call Great Art. The Tree of Life, on the other hand, is probably, like, the best movie I've ever seen, so I wouldn't feel too unjustified voting for it without having seen any of the other films on the list because I highly, highly doubt they would come close to topping it, but I won't do that.

If I see a better film this year than The Turin Horse, I'll eat my own ass

Drive was great in so many different ways, lots of redeeming qualities to that movie. The only other movies I've seen this year are what I'd consider popcorn films (Moneyball, Thor, Captain America, Bridesmaids, Our Idiot Brother etc) though Moneyball was damn good for what it was (a baseball biopic with some glaring flaws). I've had little interest in seeing other "acclaimed" films, they don't appeal to me too much (though I still have to see Tree of Life and Dragon Tattoo)

Location: here. hi.
Midnight in Paris out of these.

I've watched "Tree of Life" a few more times after merely calling it "above average" and...I still find it to be only above average. Not my favorite Malick (still "Days of Heaven"), not my least favorite Malick (that's "The New World" and only by default, because I still like that movie). I guess it would make a Top 10 because i've barely seen 10 movies from this year.

I've liked what i've seen of "Melancholia". I hated "Antichrist" and originally planned on boycotting Von Trier's further films, but then he goes and makes something the looks as intriguing (and, from what i've heard, accessible) as "Melancholia". Should get around to watching that.

The movie that stuck out to me the most in 2011 though was "Attack the Block". That was a top notch movie.

Haven't seen The Artist or M4, but i'll probably get around to it.

I haven't seen the majority of these, but I guess I'd go with Tree of Life.

Oh right I saw Bridesmaids this year too. It was okay. It was funny enough but I kind of expected it to be more than just funny, since it's not rare for comedies these days to be good films in addition to having serviceable jokes. I liked it because Kristin Wiig is a great comedian though, and Erin from the Office is pretty underrated too.
