For people who like the retro sound, two albums by Mick Collins are worth seeking out.
the Dirtbombs - Ultraglide in Black, mostly R&B cover versions with one original, reminiscent of the 60s cover versions from British invasion and American garage bands, but Collins' voice is the genuine article.
the Voltaire Brothers - I Sing the Booty Electric, P-Funk meets blaxploitaion, makes it feel like 1971 in your mind.
I have the 21-track Ultimate Collection. I'm no Temptations expert so I don't know if it's The Right compilation, but it strikes me as pretty varied and consistently fun to listen to. I can upload it if you'd like.
Various artists - The Sound of Funk, Vol. 1 http://www.mediafire.com/?ox084u20ba5w5sy Great compilation of funky tracks by various artists, both more popular and more obscure.
Various artists - The Mood Mosaic Vol. 11 - Feelin' Funky! http://www.mediafire.com/?6d6u9z4kbo0f4pi Another funk compilation, this time has some really good tracks in it. My personal favourite is probably the tight groove that is "Black Water Gold", what a perfect way to open an album with the tight bassline and that rhythm.
Edwin Starr - War & Peace http://www.mediafire.com/?l3le7p6bxaukwk4 Equipped with a powerful voice, Starr's baritone power combined with an extremely memorable set of soul songs proves to be quite a package. Starr's fantastic voice is like a mixture of Tom Jones and Teddy Pendergrass, his voice really gets showcased in some of the tracks here. The album has the amazing protest classic "War".
Gene Ammons - Brother Jug http://www.mediafire.com/?itgibsycz6gsdv0 This album is mostly jazz but has some really interesting blending of soul and funk in it too, check it out if you like jazz too.
James Mason - Rhythm of Life http://www.mediafire.com/?4718s7ti4c3jpnk This album has that classic upbeat funk sound with really catchy rhythms, great female vocals and good instruments. The title track of the album is actually really impressive, how the hell did they play that rhythm?
I also recommend The Gaturs' Wasted, sadly I couldn't find a proper version of the album (apart from one album with cryptic code needed to be able to listen to the tracks). Jon Lucien's Mind's Eye also has some great moments in, my favourite track being the extremely groovy "The Ghetto Song".
