There's little music I like more than Bach's organ works.

I'll try to get my hands on the Pinnock/English recordings Brian.

Currently doing this with the Goldberg Variations:

Plays Perahia's version of variation 1
Plays Gould's version of variation 1
Plays Tureck's version of variation 1
*repeat process for all variations and arias*

Any other great performances I need?

Gould's second version

My Tureck is Apple Lossless. It's also apparently not the best one, although I like it (I have the Deutsche Grammophon while VAI is supposed to be the best).

Which Gould recording were you listening to?

You might also try a harpsichord version of the Goldberg Variations. The Penguin and Grammophone guides both recommend versions by Trevor Pinnock, Kenneth Gilbert, and Christophe Rousset.

Awesome. I prefer that to the first, for sure. So much more emotion.

Yes, I definitely prefer period instruments for Baroque era music. I especially prefer them in cases such as this, where the modern instrument, the piano, sounds so different from the original instrument, the harpsichord.

For the keyboard concertos, there's also a middle ground option. One of the versions recommended by the Penguin Guide is on modern instruments except that a harpsichord is used: harpsichordist Robert Levin with the Stuttgart Bach Collegium, conducted by Herbert Rilling.

I didn't post when everyone else was doing it, but I've been using spotify to swim through a bunch of Gould's major Bach works: WTC 1 and 2, both versions of the goldberg variations, and the art of fugue. If I'm not burned out, I'll do organ next.

Listening to Rosalyn Tureck's recording of Well-Tempered Clavier. Fantastic, I'd highly recommend it.
