Not originality? Impact?

Impact is probably pretty close, but Jay-Z would still take it. I could definitely see Eminem taking originality, though.

huh? Jay-Z? i understand if you say that about Eminem for sure (at least rhythmically, maybe not in terms of content/subject matter). but not Jay-Z.

the reason i say Jay-Z could contend for number 1 is that he is already one of the top 2 or 3 most popular rap artists both within the rap world and in the mainstream, has the respect of his peers as one of the top 2 or 3 emcees of all-time, and was hugely important in the shift away from gangsta rap in the mid to late 90s. what if he ends up considered the number 1 emcee while also simultaneously being the most popular rapper in history? wouldn't that merit consideration for number 1?

what "impact" are we talking about? musical, cultural? with cultural impact, its Eminem by a lot imo. with musical impact, its Jay Z, not by a landslide but by enough that its not questionable imo. popularity is extremely close. Eminem at his peak was more popular than Jay, but Jay has been more popular consistently over a longer period of time. although i'm still amazed that Eminem can take half a decade off and come back and be the biggest face in music (even when his music is largely not even close to as good as his peak in most people's opinion).

hell, i raised Eminem as high as anyone with a sane mind could possibly raise him (if i have a sane mind, which i think i do). and it still wasn't ahead of Jay Z. its just not arguable imo.

Are you kidding? Em has sold 85 million albums, Jay-Z - 50. Way more top 1 singles than Jay.

And please someone define cultural and musical impact

My personal favorite is Kanye West, but it's hard to argue against Run DMC and Public Enemy and 2pac.
