Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, and Beastie Boys outside the Top 10 seems wrong.

Zach,

I agree with everything you said.

While I disagree with some of Todd's (aka Stereo Williams) rankings here, he does know a lot about hip hop music in general.

Wouldn't this make them an easy choice for the top 10 then?

Thank you. And yes, it would make Wu tang clan an almost auto lock for top ten.

what exactly is this based on? can't be impact, which is certainly in Em's favor. influence is still up in the air at this point. popularity would seem to favor Em. i can't see originality being the deciding factor.

honestly, both this and the emcee list both seem like a personal preference list. no offense to the creator.

Jay-Z seems a bit high. I think Tribe should move into the 9 spot and Jay Z #11. Beastie Boys seem high too, although are still a lock for the top 10.

My version was up, until lew took it down and put todds back up; ive messaged him, but he doesn't return my pms about the topic. I don't know why i was given orders to make new lists, and have them up, only to be taken down when some guy came back along. Scarface in the top ten is hilarious. I undestand that he is one of the old school rappers who first really delt in the gangsta image, but he is not close to be top 10; and thats only one of many problems with this list i have.

The thing with the beastie boys is that they were really the first huge selling rap artists, and they brought over the white audience to the scene of rap; yes, you can make small arguments and claims to such things as (blondie, run and aerosmith collab), but before the beastie boys, no one was really selling huge amounts of records at the time. They tapped into the white suburban population that buys most of the albums in america and basically kicked hip hop off; i read somewhere that after the beastie boys, mtv had a lot more leeway with showing rap videos on the air, and were being pressured by a public to show them more.

Another thing with the beastie boys that i don't think can be understated was their use of sampling on their album Pauls Boutique; whether you want to give sole credit to the boys, or the dust brothers, but that albums impact on rap sampling was almost revolutionary in the way that it spliced so many things together (once again you can make arguments with the bomb squads use of sampling (one reason why public enemy are so high) but it was not to the same extent)

Im open for debate on tribe and jay, though.
