Another thing about Springsteen is that he's had some pretty notable versions of his songs done by other artists: "Because the Night" by Patti Smith, "Blinded by the Light" by Manfred Mann, "Fire" by the Pointer Sisters, "This Little Girl" by Gary "U.S." Bonds, and "Banned in the USA" by the 2 Live Crew is almost a cover. Then there are somewhat less notable Springsteen songs done by Southside Johnny and Greg Kihn. There's good variety among the above artists too.

I think he should at least be ahead of Holly. Holly didn't write very many songs.

Other than the top 30 or so, this list needs some major revamping as well IMO, depends how we look at song writers. We can look at majority of written songs appeal, popularity, influence, complexity, or we could look at it from a musical theory, design, complexity, composition stand point. Either way, list needs fixing.

Like any list, it should be looked at from the point of view of the criteria.

Criteria: - Songwriting hits generated in the US and UK (lasting popularity is acknowledged but initial popularity is given precedence due to reliability and accessibility), Songwriting influence and Songwriting reputation/acclaim. Second tier (In the event of a tie): The breadth of one's songwriting - How many different artists, styles and eras, did the writer have success with/in.

^ Even by going by this criteria, this list is completely wrong. One of the few things right about it is the number one.

idk, the list has plenty wrong with it, but I do like the top 10, maybe Smokey Robinson doesn't deserve top 10, but everyone else there easily does.

I think it's a good list, though like most lists, it could use a little tweaking.

What would you suggest for tweaking, Brian? I really feel like it needs some pretty significant revisions

I would move Dylan at least ahead of Wilson, and maybe higher, switch Goffin/King with Brown, and drop Holly at least 4 positions. In the 2nd 100, there are probably more substantial changes that should be done. The further you move down any list, the harder it gets.

Agreed on those accounts. I also think that Berry should drop a few spots, your thoughts?

Berry is a very influential songwriter, but so is Dylan, who I think beats him in other things. So I'd have Dylan ahead of him, and probably HDH, but I might not drop him any more than that.

Would you agree then:

1. Lennon - McCartney
2. Dylan / Lieber - Stroller
3. Dylan / Lieber - Stroller
4. HDH
5. Berry

Because I think that would be a major step forward

Yes, I think that would be better.

Then the only other edit for the top ten is moving JB out?

Yes, that would be my only other suggestion for the top 10.

this list is fine as is, as far as dylan chuck berry , I would go with chuck, he was the first to write witty songs that were not about girl boy relationships, before dylan, he also wrote guitar parts that have been used from everyone from ac dc to the stones etc, he embodies rock n roll more so than dylan who arguably writes music that sometimes isnt "rockin' per se.
