Done.

So are their any objections to the newer list apart from Arcade Fire at #48 who should be Top 30 material by now?

Maybe Freddie Mercury should be included?

Definitely not should be, perhaps could be, but his solo stuff was neither very acclaimed nor influential. His vocal influence and reputation are based on Queen's recordings, and therefore don't count in his favor. Some of his solo recordings were quite popular in the UK and I could see him sneaking in somewhere in the lower regions of the Top 300, but all the artists there are pretty close, so I might just as well leave him off.

Kate Nash (listed at 239) was born in Brent, London, not Dublin, Ireland and should not be on the list. I recommend putting Phoenix there (if not higher)

I mentioned Phoenix for this list a few years ago, but that was before the release of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix which was extremely successful and critically acclaimed, managed a minor chart hit ("1901", which went Gold in the United States - despite never placing in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 - and was #1 on the Billboard Alternative chart for two weeks) and won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music album. They certainly deserve a place on this list by now.

Yes and yes. I could see Phoenix in the 110-120 range, they received quite a lot of acclaim and also have some influence and commercial success going for them. Would #117 look about right for them?

And Arcade Fire I could see going all the way up to #18. Among the most acclaimed artists of the 21st century, and also quite a bit commercial success and some influence lately.

Any more oversights or gainers, especially concerning the last couple of years?

The only one I could see entering the Top 300 is Accept who were quite influential within the metal community, though they lack mainstream success and acclaim outside metal circles. None of the others you mentioned is very acclaimed or influential and their success alone is not big enough for a spot in the Top 300. Try to make a case for Accept by arguing with the help of the criteria, also make a suggestion for a placement, and I might add them to the list.

I really don't think Split Enz should be all the way down at 111.

The list as it currently stands:

Site link: http://digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_artists-int.html

This list was created to pay credit to all the rock artists, who do not come from either the USA or UK, and therefore had a comparably hard time gaining the international intention they deserved.

Definition: Any artist was eligible, that performed in a rock music style and was born or formed outside the USA and UK. In addition the artist should have achieved a certain level of significance on an international level, which means that even artists that became superstars in their home country were not considered, if they failed to gain an international audience or notable acclaim in the USA or UK. The list uses a rather broad interpretation of the term rock music, including, among others, the subgenres of soul, funk, hip-hop, reggae, metal, punk, dance, post-1960s electronic music, rock-influenced pop, and alternative rock and pop genres.

Criteria: The artists were ranked for their popularity, critical acclaim and influence on rock music from a US and British point of view.

Artists in red have been newly added in the last revision.
Artists in green have been moved up in the last revision.

Reason for not using the usual criteria: Personally I always thought that the criteria, that are currently used for most of the lists, are flawed. The reason for that is, that two parts of the criteria, musical impact and influence, both reflect the view of other musicians on an artist. As a result any artist with a high influence will automatically score highly in terms of musical impact as well, since all musical impact means is acclaim from other musicians and any influential artist obviously has that. By using the criteria, that consist of the three aspects mentioned above, throwing out musical impact in favour of critical acclaim, I tried to include the opinions of three different kinds of rock music consumers: Popularity for the general public (which means mainly occasional music listeners), influence for other musicians, and critical acclaim not only for critics but also for devoted rock music fans, who will often let critical receptions influence their taste. By using the alternative criteria I tried to create a well-balanced list for all of the three groups. The resulting list does not differ too tremendously from a list that would use the old criteria, since a lot of critics seem to prefer artists with acclaim from their musical peers. Yet the new criteria were much more list-creator-friendly, since critical acclaim is much easier to determine than musical impact.

The results: I think there are a few things concerning the final list that are quite striking. A very obvious point is the dominance of certain genres, while other very important genres become insignificant when looking only at international artists. The obvious winner is reggae. About 99% of all the important reggae artists are Jamaican and therefore eligible. Electronic music, with the most important artists hailing from Germany and France, was pretty successful as well. On the losing side we have typical American genres like R&B, rap and traditional rock & roll. Another striking point is the large amount of very new artists. Today globalization and promotion via the internet make it possible for a lot of young artists to reach audiences anywhere in the world, no matter where they come from. During the 1960s and 1970s it was much harder for artists from smaller countries to gain a global following.

The band Santana was formed in the United States. Carlos Santana is the only original member left, but its still a band, not a solo career.

Currently, the following Latin American artists are on the list: Sepultura (Brazil, #44), Chris De Burgh (Argentina, #98), Os Mutantes (Brazil, #150) and Cansei de Ser Sexy (CSS) (Brazil, #234)

+ Eddy Grant (Guyana, #110)

Any opinions on whether the update's ready for the main page?
