Note by the editor: The latest revision of the list can be found here:
http://digitaldreamdoor.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1835&p=115072#p115072

Nightwish is on the list two times (48. and 72.)
Bryan Adams is spelled wrong.

ABBA, A-ha, and Simple Minds should be included.

I definitely agree. ABBA must have been an oversight, because they're a shoo-in for this list. And a-ha and Simple Minds seem more significant to rock & roll than several other inclusions on the list, so I could see those two on here, as well.

Does Jose post on the forum? I want to know why he has the Tragically Hip so high. Primal Scream seems quite low, too.

Heheh... that's clearly why! ;)

They're a great group -- and I happen to adore "Courage" -- but yeah, way too high.

Take care, friend.

I did a revision for this about two years ago on the old forum. I'll see if I can find it.

Can't find the link to the old forum but I have it on RYM: http://rateyourmusic.com/list/pauldrach/the_greatest_international_rock_artists It's definitely not perfect and I think Piper wanted to make an extra list for the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish artists since they aren't all that "international".

I just decided to glance at the Japanese artists on the list. I see that The Loudness was the first Japanese metal band signed to a U.S. major label and the first to hit the billboard top 100, but do they deserve to be above X Japan. X is much more famous in Japan (and arguably more famous in America too). Also, Hikaru Utada has sold over 23 million records in Japan. I wonder if she isn't deserving of a place on this list. But then again, this is a pretty silly list with questionable necessity and an odd order.

Good catch. No, he's not. He's a classical musician who was highly respected by and sometimes performed on the bill with rock artists. He's an absolutely great musician, but he's not a rock artist and never was. He no more belongs on a rock artists list than Leonard Bernstein or Yo-Yo Ma.

I found it now. This is the old post from 2009 with the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish artists already removed:

pauldrach wrote:
This list was created to pay credit to all the rock artists, who do not come from either the USA or UK, and therefore had a comparably hard time gaining the international intention they deserved.

Definition: Any artist was eligible, that performed in a rock music style and was born or formed outside the USA and UK. In addition the artist should have achieved a certain level of significance on an international level, which means that even artists that became superstars in their home country were not considered, if they failed to gain an international audience or notable acclaim outside their home country. The list uses a rather broad interpretation of the term rock music, including, among others, the subgenres of soul, funk, hip-hop, reggae, metal, punk, dance, post-1960s electronic music, rock-influenced pop, and alternative rock and pop genres.

Criteria: The artists were ranked for their popularity, critical acclaim and influence on rock music from an international point of view.

Reason for not using the usual criteria: Personally I always thought that the criteria, that are currently used for most of the lists, are flawed. The reason for that is, that two parts of the criteria, musical impact and influence, both reflect the view of other musicians on an artist. As a result any artist with a high influence will automatically score highly in terms of musical impact as well, since all musical impact means is acclaim from other musicians and any influential artist obviously has that. By using the criteria, that consist of the three aspects mentioned above, throwing out musical impact in favour of critical acclaim, I tried to include the opinions of three different kinds of rock music consumers: Popularity for the general public (which means mainly occasional music listeners), influence for other musicians, and critical acclaim not only for critics but also for devoted rock music fans, who will often let critical receptions influence their taste. By using the alternative criteria I tried to create a well-balanced list for all of the three groups. The resulting list does not differ too tremendously from a list that would use the old criteria, since a lot of critics seem to prefer artists with acclaim from their musical peers. Yet the new criteria were much more list-creator-friendly, since critical acclaim is much easier to determine than musical impact.

The results: I think there are a few things concerning the final list that are quite striking. A very obvious point is the dominance of certain genres, while other very important genres become insignificant when looking only at international artists. The obvious winner is reggae. About 99% of all the important reggae artists are Jamaican and therefore eligible. Electronic music, with the most important artists hailing from Germany and France, was pretty successful as well. On the losing side we have typical American genres like R&B, rap and traditional rock & roll. Another striking point is the large amount of very new artists. Today globalization and promotion via the internet make it possible for a lot of young artists to reach audiences anywhere in the world, no matter where they come from. During the 1960s and 1970s it was much harder for artists from smaller countries to gain a global following.

I think I might have actually made one, but it might have gotten lost in the purge on the old forum before this new forum was made.

I might have even considered making Canadian and Australian lists as well.

You started one for non-English UK artists. It's still there.
