Posted this on the old forum, but just as a reminder: Neil Young is way too low, I know there's Popularity etc., but I don't think the likes of KISS, Aerosmith, Chicago or Alice Cooper beat him on any of the other criteria.

I think the way the criteria breaks down is that Elton beats Stevie and Zep in popularity, but not by very much, and they both beat Elton in influence. Stevie would have the most musical impact of the 3, and it's close between Zep and Elton here. So I think Stevie is the right choice for #1, and it's close between Zep and Elton for #2.

I think Led Zeppelin have a significant edge on Elton John in musical impact.

Musical impact is the reaction by other artists to a specific artist, correct?

Yeah, that's pretty much it, and particularly their contemporaries.

That's what I thought. Then I don't know about what Clash said, if Led has the edge, which I'll admit they probably do, it's not by much. Elton generated a major reaction from many of his contemporaries

Strange how much better McCartney did compared to Lennon.

If this list was only based on popularity from 1970-79 Neil Young is well ahead of KISS, Aerosmith and Alice Cooper .... Take care

Not to mention his influence, acclaim and music impact is much higher than any of those as well.

Yeah, If I had to give an edge to one of them, it would probably be Zep, but I don't think it's by much. Both have fairly high musical impact, but neither is among the very top artists there.

I suspect they and ABBA are missing because they were determined to be not rock, because I don't think there's any doubt that both belong if they are rock. Bread might be missing for the same reason, though they weren't as big as the other 2, so it's possible they wouldn't have made it anyway. I think these artists are rock, especially ABBA.

thanks Gminer. So we can conclusively say that Elton John takes popularity, as shown by the chart success.
