10 favorite lyricists (in no particular order):
Ani DiFranco
Mos Def
Will Oldham
Kurt Cobain
Leonard Cohen
Eminem
Big Punisher
Sam Beam
Joni Mitchell
Tom Waits

yeah, its weird mixing rap with other subgenres (my feelings have definitely shifted to the "rap has become its own genre at this point" side of the argument). the role of the vocals is so different it makes it impossible to compare how the lyrics work within them.

anyway... of every music-related discipline, this is the one whose canon i disagree with most. i have mixed feelings towards Dylan (although i'm 100% a fan of him as a performer/songwriter). even Neil, who is one of my all-time top 10 favorite artists, is kind of hit or miss as a lyricist for me, although more hit than miss. i absolutely loathe Lennon and Morrison as lyricists (although i enjoy Morrison as a frontman). and i just kind of laugh at Waters, who can be just plain lame sometimes (although, again, the musical component to his songwriting is solid, just not the lyrics).

non-rock lyricists i love: Skip James, Robert Johnson, Townes Van Zandt.

favorite lyrical performances (cross-genre):

Hellhound on My Trail (Robert Johnson)
Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
For the Sake of the Song (Townes Van Zandt)
Light of Some Kind (Ani DiFranco)
Mathematics (Mos Def)
Blue (Joni Mitchell)
Till I Collapse (Eminem)
Don't Let It Bring You Down (Neil Young)
Heart-Shaped Box (Kurt Cobain)

although to be honest, the best lyrics we have in popular music are the ones that have no named credit. they've been passed down and altered by hundreds of songwriters over centuries. sadly, this process seems to be dead now, cause everyone is obsessed with authorship and intellectual property and all that. not necessarily a bad thing cause it gets the right people paid, but i wish artists were more willing to share these days. my opinion only.

Good point. On the Greatest Lyrical Performance thread, I definitely will be including Stack-A-Lee (Stagger Lee), as that's one of the few rock songs that fits that tradition.
