Where would you guys put "Hope for Happiness/Joy of a Toy" by Soft Machine? I'm thinking #19 because it was one of the first instances of running an organ through effects, and it's still a damn intimidating performance to listen to.

Ridiculously awesome song, I'd give it somewhere in top 30

I'm thinking #14. Better than Winwood, but not better than Banks. Here's the track for you guys to listen to. The other is an excerpt from a live performance:

This list needs some Queen songs, I'd add Bo Rhap, Seven Seas of Rhye and The March of the Black Queen.

This list just needs a full overhaul, and someone to actually care, I'm not that person, any volunteers?

Shall we work from the top down? I would say the top three should remain the same performances although I think that CTTE and KE9 should be above Tarkus. Not a huge gap, what do you think?

A bit lower down, I think that we can all agree that there needs to a be in the top ten:

A Jon Lord performance (probably Lazy, Highway Star could probably squeeze in as well)
A Jerry Lee Lewis performance (I'd suggest Whole Lotta Shakin)
"Roundabout" (probably the most widely acclaimed keyboard performance in all of rock music, especially the solo)"
"Light My Fire" (maybe even top five)

The Top 5 should probably be exactly as it is. Tarkus happens to be much harder to play than Close to the Edge, but I may consider switching it with Karn Evil 9, as it may be more technical. I also want to see Highway Star higher just because it was such an immensely influential performance. I'd probably put it at 7.

Any other Jerry Lee Lewis suggestions for Top 10?

Also, I'd rather focus on adding more performances right now. Then we can order them.

Getting back to the point I raised before about making the list more representative of all rock keyboard, it should be noted that in the early years of rock, piano performances tended to be short, fairly simple, and intended to serve the needs of the song rather than be noticable in-and-of themselves. So that should be kept in mind to assess that era fairly, even if the question of exactly which performances to choose is a tough question. As influence is part of the criteria and Fats Domino is one of the most influential rock keyboardists - maybe even THE most influential rock keyboardist - of all time, he should be represented in a way commensurate with that huge influence, though I don't know which specific performances are most deserving.

One early performance that is longer and more virtuosic is "What'd I Say" by Ray Charles, so that would seem to be a solid choice. To me, "Good Golly Miss Molly" seems to have the most impressive piano work of Little Richard's biggest songs, though that doesn't necessarily mean that it's his greatest.

What I've mentioned here is just the tip of the iceberg.

I was going to volunteer Tutti Frutti for Little Richard.

I agree with Brian about "What'd I Say". Hugely influential, and technically impressive to boot.

"Breathless" "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee O'Dee" and (of course) "Great Balls of Fire" are other possible additions for JLL.

There should be more than one Billy Joel performance as well. I'd recommend "Root Beer Rag" and "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant."

Prelude/Angry Young Man is already on there.

But where would you place the JLL and Ray Charles? Like I'm trying to adequately balance technicality and influence here. I'm thinking maybe we should split this list up into one for piano and one for keyboard. The piano one would have more bluesy piano types like Jerry Lee Lewis, and the keyboard one would be more technical and proggy.

Billy definitely deserves more than one song, though. He's a very gifted pianist.

I think that seperating "piano" from "keyboard" may be asking for too much at this point... I say we keep it with "influence, impact" and all that kind of stuff making up half the criteria, and technical ability making up the other half. We should be able to get a pretty even balance that way.

I think JLL definitely needs a song in the top ten. What'd I Say (the Ray Charles one) should probably be top fifteen.

Yeah. But what do you suggest for JLL? I say Great Balls of Fire.

I'd say Whole Lotta Shakin'. Both of them are probably about equal in influence (both of them are among the most influential piano songs in the entire genre), but being a pianist I can definitely say that Whole Lotta Shakin' is the more technically difficult song to play.
