Clemente, Ichiro, Barfield, Jordan and Kaline in that order.
Best at their position, from most to least obvious choices:
3. LF Barry Bonds (distant 2nd: Carl Yastrzemski)
If Bonds is better than Yaz is not a distant 2nd. Yaz had so much a better throwing arm that he's pretty close out there. Barry is only a C in win shares fielding. According to win shares fielding Sheckard is the top guy in LF.
4. C Ivan Rodriguez (distant 2nd: Charlie Bennett)
I woudn't make Bennett 2nd. Fielding stats are unreliable enough, let alone 19th century fielding stats. Bennett is only an A in win shares fielding. The A+ guys are Ewing, Hartnett, C. Johnson, Karkovice, Killefer, I-Rod, Schreckenghost and Pop Snyder. These are as of 2001.
5. 1B Keith Hernandez (distant 2nd: John Olerud)
Win Shares fielding has Tino Martinez as the best ever per inning.
6. CF Willie Mays (close 2nd: Andruw Jones)
Win Shares fielding has Curt Flood as the best ever per inning, and several guys better than Mays. Speaker is by far the best career CFer in Win Shares.
7. SS Ozzie Smith (very close 2nd: Mark Belanger)
There's several guys all close in win shares fielding. Ozzie, Tinker, Dahlen, Wagner, Belanger, Germany Smith, Rizzuto.....and Jennings is the best ever on a per inning basis, but he was not a regular SS for all that long.
8. 2B Bill Mazeroski or Bid McPhee or Joe Gordon
Mazeroksi has it easily in Win Shares fielding. He's got the most career fielding win shares at 2B and also has the most per inning.
