Listen to how he just launches into that groove at 1:54...!
And those tempo changes at the end?
He makes it all sound effortless!

I won't hesitate in saying it - that was the best drum solo I've ever heard in my life.

Yeah that was also quite impressive as far as dynamics too... Not too many people if any have the mixture of speed and touch vinnie has, his ghostnotes in that vid I posted were otherworldly too (IMO) and from what I gather hes the best improvisational drummer of all time too (in addition to being a legendary sight-reader)

I don't ever see him being overtaken on this list

Yeah, Kick The Chair is just EPIC. That intro blew me away when I first heard the song a while back. At the time I didn't really know the extent of Vinnie's brilliance. I just figured it was some kick-ass new thrash drummer that Megadeth got for the album.

Definitely.
Some say Weckl is the best in the world, and he did blow my mind, like big time.
But Vinnie has so much more fire, and his grooving is far better.

Weckl seems to attract a lot more criticism than vinnie from what I've noticed... Actually I can't think of any Corea drummer who's drawn more naysayers

I definitely disagree though, he practically defines fluidity

You disagree with what?
I dont think it's even arguable that Vinnie has more fire and better grooves.

Weckl is frighteningly fluid though, you're right, guy is scary.

Weckl has sick grooves. His fusion is some of the most natural I've heard.

He does have great grooving when he wants.
Nothing that tops Vinnie at his best, though. Imo.

I disagree with weckls critics, lol. I certainly don't think they are that far apart though... At all

my drum teacher also criticizes weckl, mainly for a few things. One big criticism is he doesn't have enough feeling while Vinnie is full of feeling. I think that's a bullshit statement, and even if he doesn't have feeling so what his drumlines are awesome. The other complaint is Weckl is very by the book. My teacher (and most good drummers) can predict everything he's going to play when he gets going, what he's gonna hit, what tempo's/grooves he's going to jump into, he's very predictable. That's also not something to bash him heavily for, but at the same time it's not like Vinnie's wild improvisations. Not saying Weckl doesn't Improv, Vinnie's just more out there and Weckl is quite conservative. But the actual skill gap comes down heaviest on versatility, Vinnie has done everything, Weckl's done nearly everything.

Yeah that's how I was gonna describe it too. Weckl is much more 'conservative' with his playing usually.

But yeah Vinnie is UNTOUCHABLE as #1 here.
The feeling, versatility, grooving, improv ability, dynamics, control, I mean the guy has ZERO flaws as a drummer.

yeah I agree, I don't think we'll see anyone better in our lifetime...well unless Tony Royster stops with the rap and starts honing his abilities for years to come....since he's still very young and has a long way to go. I still don't see it happening though
