Thought it would be a cool idea to get some discussion on this list I've been doing on Microsoft Word.

Criteria: acclaim, creativity, speed, technique, originality.

1. My Generation - John Entwistle (The Who)
2. 5:15 (Live at the Royal Albert Hall) - John Entwistle (The Who)
3. Bass Solo (Live at San Fransisco) - Stu Hamm (Joe Satriani)
4. Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) - Cliff Lee Burton (Metallica)
5. N.I.B. - Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath)
6. Sparks (Live at Leeds) - John Entwistle (The Who)
7. Tommy The Cat - Les Claypool (Primus)
8. Cause We've Ended As Lovers (Crossroads 2007) - Tal Wilkenfeld (Jeff Beck)
9. Freewill - Geddy Lee (Rush)
10. Driven (Rush in Rio) - Geddy Lee (Rush)

Well I'm sure that Driven from Rush In Rio is probably a better choice than Freewill for Ged. Tommy The Cat by Primus is quite the spectacle. I won't get all serious about positions or anything, I'll just throw in whatever comes to mind.

Is that really a bass solo though? I always looked at it as a bridge.

It sounds like it could be, but it's a solo. Would you consider that second or two of chaos in La Villa Strangiato?

You should also consider Elvis for the list beings he played the first bass solo.

I'd say it has to be at least 30 seconds long.

5:15 has no claim to #1 whatsoever. I like the idea of a bass solos list though. If you're into bass solos, check out:

- David Ellefson, live solo 1995 (youtube)
- Jason Newsted, Cunning Stunts bass/guitar doodle (my favorite bass performance ever) (1996)
- Chris Squire -- Ritual, live YesSymphonic bass solo
- Fucking Jack Bruce in live "Crossroads"

Those are all live. For studio stuff I heartily recommend:

- The Fish (Yes...Chris Squire)
- The Call of Ktulu (Cliff Burton takes multiple solos in this)
- Orion (Cliff has one full on solo here)
- Time (Anthrax...Frank has a sick ass solo)
- Naked in the Rain (RHCP)
- Coffee Shop (RHCP)
- Nobody Weird Like Me (RHCP)
- Aeroplane (RHCP)
- A Change of Seasons (Dream Theater)

There's some off the top of my head I really like
