Looks like it's only for bass guitar.

How yall been. I've been looking over this list and a couple things stick out to me. First and foremost, Alex Webster needs to be raised drastically. He has some of the best chops in all of metal. Period.

Also Sean Malone should probably crack the top ten or at least be put right next to Digiorgio. The dude is just a monster and has been shown to hang with the big boys like Manring.

At the very least can be put ahead of Choy, IMO.

Claypool still feels low, and is Stanley Clarke really not better than Pattitucci? And I'd agree with Mingus but I don't think this includes upright, but Mingus is the greatest jazz bassist without a doubt.

Patitucci is better than Clarke yes. Patitucci is one of the very few I reckon who has completely and utterly mastered the bass guitar. Like, in every way. He knows the instrument inside out, he could probably do just about anything. (Probably roughly analogous to a Bruford or something)

Claypool IS rather low here, he in reality should be around where Myung is I reckon. Which isn't to say Myung is in the right spot either, I mean Claypool belongs wherever Myung belongs probably. This whole list is a total mess right now, right names, more or less random order (especially below the top 10 or 20). I will say that in terms of famous (read: non-session) guys, Claypool is among the best ever. Levin, Sheehan, Willis, Patitucci, Clarke, Wooten, Hamm, Jaco, DiGiorgio all beat him though, he's like a tier or something below them. (Some of this is a bit fuzzy to me though, I must admit)

Hi everyone
i'm reposting this here instead of Small Topics, maybe here someone will answer

i have been reading this forum for a while (mostly the vocalists threads  ) and you seem quite competent and objective (mostly  ) and i wondered if you guys could give me a technical comment on this bassist? he is considered one of the best here in italy, but i have absolutely no technical knowledge and i wanted an objective comment on him :thumb: could he enter your most skilled list? let's expand outside USA

here are some of his group's songs, just a warning: they aren't excactly metal

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hf0eyV9isY an accelerated song as a 'joke' in a competition where the artist had to sing only a 1min of their song as a recap, they sang all the song by accelerating it)

oh btw i have no idea if those songs are the best one to showcase the bassist skills :parrot:
thanks

So who's more skilled at upright bass? Stanley Clarke or Charles Mingus?

Creativity would go to Mingus IMO, while versatility favors Clarke. When considering skilled and great bassists (including upright), you can't leave Mr. PC, Paul Chambers out of the mix. Pattitucci is also quite versatile.

Don't play upright, sry

Mr PC is indeed 'the' upright dude tho in terms of the history of the instrument in jazz, as far as I know (not necessarily skill wise, just in general)

No idea who he is. This list is also kind of defunct pending completion of the main list. I will say though that by and large we have good names on this list, from what I've seen, they're just kind of randomly placed. The truth is much as it apparently is with drums, fusion bassists tend by and large to be much more skilled than rock bassists. Jazz bassists mostly, most of the great ones played upright so they don't count for this list. But when it is completed it'll be a lot of shredder types (Sheehan/Hamm/etc), technical metal guys (DiGiorgio/Choy/etc) and fusion guys (Clarke/Berlin/Wooten/etc) dominating the list is my guess.

To be sure there ARE some rock guys who are very very skilled and will probably make it too, like Tony Levin who's nuts, Les Claypool and even Flea I'd imagine, Rob Trujillo, David Ellefson and Matt Freeman...

Never thought Ellefson was anything special, honestly.
