Actually come to think of it I do own that skimpy 'best of the 80s' Maiden album someone gave to me for free. I haven't paid as much attention to the bass in particular in Powerslave vs other performances. Will have to listen to it again sometime. At the moment I'm inclined to say Number of the Beast is his best

It's certainly a fantastic performance, but I think he does better on "Rime of the Ancient Mariner"

Both have incredible bass in them, but I think Powerslave gets the nod for that amazing melodic bit toward the end. Plus the main bassline in the verses is awesome too.
Seriously, and people criticize Steve for just playing fast all the time? BULLSHIT!

I've always seen that as a strange criticism. What's wrong with playing fast all the time? Does that mean John Petrucci sucks too?

Well, when ALL you're concerned about is speed, it kinda detracts from the quality of the music, imo.
Michael Angelo Batio, anyone?

That's not the same as playing fast all the time. You can play fast all the time (Marty Friedman) but have that just be incidental really, and have the focus be on beautiful, moving playing.

Say Neg, are you a fan of ELP, 70s Crimson (ok, I know you like them) or Genesis? What do you think of the respective bassists therein? Cheers

Cant comment on Genesis, but I love Greg Lake and John Wetton. Both are phenomenal, especially Lake.
Distorted hell-bass on "The Barbarian" ftw!

You think a Bassist's Essential Works thread would be a good idea, like the one on the guitar forum?

It's occurred to me before that it might be neat to put something like that under each name/bio (? if we do bios for some reason) in the main list.

Like:

2. John Entwistle
[possibly a bio here]
Essential works: The Real Me, Won't Get Fooled Again, Drowned, My Generation
