Yes, #1 on our all time greatest rock bassists list, and we're underrating him, sure.

Easy pardner...it's usually a spell quieter around these parts. Boo boo has tried to jump in my shit in the past about Jamerson...but I suppose I'd rather try to educate rather than humiliate lol. I had assumed that boo boo was related to Yogi Bear and sharing a piginet basket though. But He usually calms down...eventually.

I do agree that James is greatly underrepresented on this list, particulalry in light of some players who have multiple listings and Jamersons vast arsonal of incredible basslines. I suppose it's pretty much based on the musical preference of those who put this list together (before my time here), and the emergence on the Greatest Players list of Jamerson (which I WAS here for).

lol, I learned from obamas dealings with the repubs, its better to be aggressive and fight back ,or they escalate.

yeah It looks like a prog rock favorites list rather than an objective greatest list ,how long has that evening train can easily take number as can bernadette, stanley clarke said that was one of the hardest lines he ever had to play , not to mention it grooves, and I know you are one of the more knowledgeable respectable guys on here.

Thanks for the compliment. I think boo boos point may be that since we got Jamerson to the #1 slot on the Greatest Bassist list (he was #6 when I got here before we spent the better part of a year making up the new list with some of the old moderators...who were all pretty knowledgible and open to new ideas like adding a bunch of the studio greats to the list), Jamerson is not underrated here so far as the Greatest Player list, but I do agree that the other bass related lists are narrow and non inclusive of some fantastic basslines like some of the Ronnie Baker stuff as just one example . The fact the Earl Young is not even mentioned on the 100 Greatest Rock Drummers list tells me all I need to know about how that list was put together, or no Greg Phillanganes on the keyboard list)???

Evening Train is a terrific bassline and ensemble piece plus tons more from Jamerson. Some other Jamerson parts which perhaps don't get the recognition they deserve is on some of the Jr Walker tracks. Home Cookin is a masterpiece, and listen to Roadrunner and Shake And Finger Pop and you can see how Jamerson had a profound impact on many of the future Funk bassists (minus the slapping and popping), but the attitude and syncopation on those tunes, combined with the JB bassists contributions opened the door for the younger guys to come along and add the slapping and popping to Jamersons feel, and it proves to be a huge contribution to the evolution of Funk bass playing.

his comping on shake and finger pop is amazing, the most impressive thing about jamerson is timing and his ability to play chromatic lines without going off beat or sounding out of key, I never heard anything from geddy lee that could resemble that, if they are going by complexity on that list ,jamerson should have the top 5 all to himself.

Anyone have an opinion on the bassist of Cake? The guy is phenomenal, but hasn't had enough time to establish himself.

I don't know jack about Cake sadly, except for their (to my ears abhorrent) 'War Pigs' cover. What was their big hit again?

Short Skirt/Long Jacket, although pretty much all their music is good.

I know he's ranked pretty high in the bassists list, but I still feel like a lot of people don't give Mike Rutherford enough credit.
