Man I swear, sometimes I think Squire is on par with Entwistle.
Squire's whole sound and style just leaves me in total awe.

Squire is a pretty good choice for a starter bass. The Precision and Jazz bass knockoffs are pretty close to the real thing based on my stopping by a Guitar Center one day and playing around with them for a few minutes, although I haven't played seriously for some time. I own a Fender Precision Lyte, a Spector 5 string fretless and a Squire 4 string Jazz Bass copy fretless. Which one is my favorite bass? The Squire for it's sound and playability despite the fact it cost less than a third of each of the other two basses.

Wow. That's awesome. Yeah Squiers are really good. I'm realizing more and more how it's not nearly as clear cut as you'd think, the spending tiers vs quality. I was in Guitar Center and this Ibanez Soundgear, also this Jackson JS3, both low/mid price basses (like $300 to $500 range, somewhere in there) and the tone on both was AMAZING, I would have thought they were both at minimum $800-900 and possibly up to $1200 instruments just based off tone if I didn't know better.

Damn you think he's better than John?

They're way too close to call, for me anyway, but I love how their tones are so similar. Entwistle on Live At Leeds sounds identical to Squire on most of Yes' studio albums.

Yes that's the Squire. It's a Vintage Modified Jazz and is a copy of a 1962 Fender Jazz Bass.

Very cool thing my old friend Allen Rawls (CEO of The Motown Museum) sent me. They gathered all these Detroit area bass players and their instruments at the museum last weekend as a sort of tribute to Jamerson and Babbitt.

By the way...my brother and I will be headed to Detroit next week for several affairs and events. Coincidentally, some local musicians, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, Martha Reeves, and several others are holding a musical memorial honoring Babbitt on Saturday night. We plan to do our best to attend, although we have several other committments that evening between the two of us. We'll also be going down to the Motown Museum to tour the place and visit with my friend Allen Rawls who was recently named CEO of the museum. My brother did a lot of work there as a teenager, playing sessions and writing lead sheets for Motowns publishing company, Jobete.

Haha Stu you wouldn't happen to be SoCal1 on Talkbass would you? I'm reading a thread there and I was like 'wow this guy's writing 'voice' sounds an awful lot like StuBass, prob just a coincidence' but now SoCal1 is talking about James Jamerson and playing in Detroit in 1960 and...

Incidentally, I don't know if I've been public about this in the past, but I'm planning to take this thing global when we're done with it. Talkbass, etc. I want this to become a serious reference for bass on the whole f'n net, and I'm excited for that
