You're accusing me of blanket statements? Mr. 2D games are bad for the video game industry?

So are Respawn Entertainment making the next Modern Warfare game or is it going to be the new Infinity Ward after what happened?

So is Final Fantasy dead? The last three installments have been total garbage. Can't see the series recovering.

A few missteps isn't gonna kill a franchise this big.

the demands of the fanbase and the promise of sales tends to trump any misstep, no matter how shitty the game becomes, if fans are all emotionally attached you can bet the top dogs will milk it dry.

Dunno. It's certainly lost an enormous amount of popularity since it's heyday. Infact, the popularity of Japanese games in the west is declining big time. I guess the modern western gamer demands more from the gaming experience than today's Japanese developers can provide. They are too stuck in the past and this is really damaging the FF series. The main complaint with FF14, for example, has been it's archaic, pre-WOW game design. Oh well, every dog has it's day as they say.

Pretty big assumption to make.

In truth I'm just being realistic about the modern Japanese game development scene. It hasn't progressed at all for a long, long time. Most new Japanese franchises are so rooted in "Japan only" concepts and art design that they have no chance of making a dent in the western market. It's a fucking shame as there is plenty of creativity in the Japanese entertainment industry that is going to waste on faceless, generic anime-based shoot em ups with nothing to set them apart from the pack. One game just seems to blend into the next over there... and yet people call the western gaming development scene generic.

True, I was being a dick.

Except a ton of western gaming works will have japanese names within the credits index... but there's some truth to what you're saying.

Well, the way I look it things is thus: What major new game franchise has emerged from Japan in the past ten years? In the west we've had Halo, COD, Splinter Cell, Bioshock, Far Cry, Dead Space, God of War, Killzone, Gears of War... Meanwhile, the only succesful Japanese games nowadays seem to be continuations of franchises established in the 80's. One notable exception I can think of is Bayonetta, which is a fantastic game with original anime-based design.

Dead Rising: Not that big of a franchise

Devil May Cry: Moved to a western development company

Onimusha: Attempted to integrate western elements before dying a severe death

The rest: Who gives a fuck? Ace Attorney?
