Stanley Kubrick is probably my favorite director, but I always have a hard time deciding which of his masterpieces is my favorite. Which of Kubrick's films is the best?

A Clockwork Orange. But I'll be damned if that wasn't hard.

kubrick is the same as lynch for me.... the less idiosyncratic and more traditional, the more i like it... in case of lynch it's "elephant man", and for kubrick "eyes wide shut".
though even their respective bests are merely 'good' imo... please don't rip my head off

It changes too often to even pick one but it's between '2001, Dr.Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange and Eyes Wide Shut'.

I threw a vote to The Shining, though it's really close between that and Dr. Strangelove and Full Metal Jacket.

2001 by far. I like several of his movies, but that's the only one I really love.

A Clockwork Orange. For me it's the most complete.

i actually don't know anymore and usually my go to answer is 2001 but then I later realize that there's more sequences I enjoy in it than actually calling it one of my favorite films. I think if I were to choose one though to take as a whole and to stack it up into what ever context will give me some kind of favorite in some kind of way from him, it would be The Shining.

Eyes Wide Shut really is his best film overall, though there are isolated sequences in many of his other films which are better than any isolated sequence in it. Next time you watch Eyes Wide Shut, watch the pool table scene at the end first. Consider it and what it means very carefully. Then watch the rest of the movie with that scene in the back of your mind. You won't believe how much better this makes the movie.

That's a pretty interesting approach to the film. I'll try that next time I watch it (unless I watch it with someone who hasn't seen it yet)
If you think in terms of overall movie as apposed to isolated scenes, I still think Barry Lyndon and Dr. Strangelove would be higher on my list than Eyes Wide Shut.
