I'm somewhat ashamed to say I haven't gotten around to watching any of these. My dad gave me the Akira Kurosawa Samurai Collection last Christmas, so I have absolutely no excuse for not at least starting the journey into 50s Japanese cinema.

Late Spring all the way because it may very well be my favorite film.

I have become a huge Ozu fan but I still don't get the love for Late Spring. I mean, I do, but I don't see why one would place it higher than, say Early Summer or An Autumn Afternoon.

I agree that those films do some things better than Late Spring in a way that could be seen as more impressive (Early Summer was my fav Ozu for awhile and therefore also my fav film). But as for why I like LS the best: more and better Setsuko Hara than any other Ozu film, his most intensely focused character study (did I mention that character happened to also be played by Setsuko Fucking Hara), and also weird slanty pconnects with the story.

Fair enough.
Like Hara a lot, but for me she doesn't stand out more than the other actors in Ozu. She's hotter than most, for sure, but therefore not necessarily more of a stand out.

Haven't seen The Human Condition yet. Nine hours is a long time.

Ryu is what makes Ozu great for me. More so than Hara.

It's all relative. Rashomon is one of my favorite films. Eeyore just happened to list eight films that I consider more or less perfect and Rashomon places eighth on that list.
